Grace Zhou

PhD student in Anthropology

Grace’s project explores shifting moral economies and changing notions of ethical citizenship in post-socialist communities. As an anthropologist, she grounds her interests in post-Soviet Central Asia, a region where livelihoods often depend on transnational shuttle-trading across the Chinese border. Her research centers on the physical marketplace--the bazaar--as well as the transactional and social networks that sustain it. She is interested in the ways that the market manages relations which extend beyond mere economic transaction. As selves are refashioned through “doing business,” relations at the level of community, city, and even nation are being renegotiated.
