Sociology

My dissertation focuses on what people know; I am interested in race, gender, and class inequalities in what I call “information capital” between groups. I ask, for example, whether women know more than men, whether some racial or ethnic groups know more than others, and whether there are certain domains in which usual group hierarchies are subverted. With collaborators, I also study the impact of gender on academic publishing.  We’ve found that women are less likely to be first or last authors on a paper, and less likely to cite their own previous work. I also work on several research projects for Stanford’s Center on Poverty and Inequality.
