Nick Camp

PhD student in Psychology

When is violence in the name of self-defense permissible, and when should it be condemned as aggression? Nick’s research examines how stereotypes don’t just influence the judgments we make, but the “facts of the case” themselves. He uses techniques from social cognitive psychology to test how minority groups stereotyped as violent attract attention and are judged to possess greater capacity and intention to harm. He is interested in how these processes influence actors’ decisions to engage in violent self-defense, as well as others’ judgments of how justified such self-defense is towards majority and minority actors.
