Tamar Kreps

PhD student at the GSB

Tamar's research explores the antecedents of moralization—how people understand moral framings, and when and how people use them—and its consequences. For example, her work has demonstrated that, despite a long tradition of utilitarian reasoning in moral philosophy and the importance of harm as a moral foundation, lay people do not perceive utilitarian justifications as morally based. In her dissertation project, she demonstrates that people who moralize an issue, compared to those with an equally extreme but non-moral view, believe that others’ views are more revealing of their personal character, and hence reject others who disagree with them.
