In addition to the fundamental science research performed by its funded research groups, GCEP supports a small energy-analysis team on its staff. This group examines energy technologies from a comparative and systems point of view to help GCEP evaluate its research portfolio and contribute to discussion in the greater energy community. The energy analysis team focuses on four areas: Technology Assessment, Systems Analysis, Portfolio Analysis and Exergy Charts.

• Technology Assessment is conducted by a group of three GCEP staff members who organize energy workshops in various areas of energy research and issues reports. These workshops and reports are intended to assess the state of the art in low greenhouse gas energy technologies and generate discussion among researchers in the context of GCEP's goals.
  
  
• Systems Analysis is primarily focused on net energy analyses that weigh the energetic costs of energy production against the energy produced, with the goal of quantifying the overall energy efficiency of the production process.
  
  
• Portfolio Analysis is led by our Research Theme Leaders who provide insight on the current state of energy technologies and highlight opportunities where GCEP research could make a significant contribution.
  
  
• Exergy Flow Charts are designed to convert data on energy supply and consumption into exergy numbers, which reflect the thermodynamic value of resources. The charts encourage dialogue about resource utilization by helping visualize the relationships among energy reservoirs, conversions and services.
