TEMPE, Ariz. – Kayla Bonstrom homered but Stanford could not keep pace with Arizona State's offense, dropping the series opener 9-1 in five innings Friday night.

Bonstrom hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the third inning. It is the 29th home run of her career, moving her into sole possession of seventh place all-time in Stanford history.

The Cardinal (13-30, 0-19 Pac-12) registered a hit in each of the first four innings but had difficulty sustaining a rally, while Arizona State (28-22, 4-15 Pac-12) jumped out to a quick lead and never let up.

Carolyn Lee (6-19) got the start in the circle for Stanford and went 2.0 innings before she was relieved by Haley Snyder who pitched the final 2.1 innings. The Sun Devils' Kelsey Kessler (14-10) pitched a complete game to pick up the win.

Highlights from Stanford's game at Arizona State.

Arizona State loaded the bases to start the game and took a 1-0 lead when Nikki Girard hit a comebacker off Lee and bounced to Lauren Wegner at second base who got the out but provided enough time for the runner at third to score.

The Sun Devils capitalized on a Stanford error and Jennifer Soria hit a two-run home run to extend Arizona State's lead to 4-0.

Stanford got a run back in the top of the third inning when Bonstrom hit her fourth home run of the season – a solo shot to right with two outs.

Arizona State loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the third and capitalized for three more runs to take a 7-1 lead.

The Sun Devils capped its win with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the run-rule victory.

Stanford will look to even the series Saturday at Noon (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
