About

I am interested in philosophical questions about human agency and standards of action. The deepest questions in this area, to my mind, are questions about the nature of practical necessity. In virtue of what is it the case that we ought to do anything? I work in a tradition of thought that hopes to find an answer to this question by looking carefully at the structure of human agency. As part of this inquiry, I am currently writing a series of papers on motivation. I focus in particular on the question of how we are related to our inclinations when we reflect on them for the purpose of deciding what to do. I believe it is much harder to arrive at a clear conception of this relation than most people think.
