Frequently Asked Questions

HTML5 Interface:

What's is available for instant playback and download?

Most graduate courses are available for instant download or progressive playback on all major browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer). Progressive playback works on mobile devices with a strong data signal or Wi-Fi connection. There are two viewing resolution options available (540 and 720) on all browsers.

For downloading videos, there are two resolution options available (LO and HI) for all browsers. Downloads are only available to desktops/laptops, not mobile devices. If space and file size is a concern, we recommend that you choose to download the LO resolution file.

What is the difference between the 540 and 720 video resolutions?

You can now select from two viewing resolutions (540 and 720) on the HTML5 video player. To change the video resolution click on the "HD" icon, located on the bottom right of the video player, to toggle between the 720 HD and 540 SD resolutions. The 540 and 720 signifies the display resolution of the video file. The 720 resolution will provide high definition image quality and improved viewing at a larger size; however, videos with 720 resolutions will require additional time to load since the size of the file will be larger than the 540 resolution.

When downloading how much space will videos / lectures take up on my device(s)?

The HI (720) download option will range from 700MB to over 1GB. The LO (540) option will range between 200MB to 600MB for each video.

How do I get my course videos on my mobile device?

Through progressive playback or downloading the video to your desktop, you can sync the video file with your mobile device.

Example, if you would like to play a lecture offline via your iPhone:

  • Download the video file onto your desktop/laptop
  • Import to iTunes
  • Sync your phone with your iTunes library to upload the file to your iPhone

How do I play the course video/mp4 file on my computer after download?

You will need a video player on your computer to view downloaded videos. A few examples are Windows Media Player, VLC Player, QuickTime or iTunes.

What can I do with the videos I download?

You can watch the videos within the current academic quarter in which you are enrolled.
When you download the videos/lectures you agree that you WILL NOT:

  • Share
  • Upload to the Internet or anywhere else other than your own device(s) for your own personal use during the current academic quarter in which you are enrolled
  • Sell or distribute
  • Edit or alter the content in any way

Distribution of this content is a major violation of the Stanford Student Honor Code. If found in violation of copyright law penalties can reach fines up to $150,000.

I don't see my course lecture live, when can I access my course videos?

None of our courses are offered live. Lecture videos are streaming online within two hours of the lecture’s end on campus and will be made available for viewing until the end of the current quarter.

How can I improve video buffering issues?

If you are connecting to the Internet wirelessly, please try connecting via an Ethernet cable to help improve stability. If you are connecting on a home network, check to make sure your computer or no other computer on your network is using a high bandwidth program (i.e. streaming a movie, downloading files, Internet-based games) as this could steal bandwidth from the stream coming to your computer. We recommend viewing the course videos using the Google Chrome browser, which is more optimized to load the HTML5 video player in your browser.

If you have previously played the video successfully without buffer issues but are currently experiencing problems, we recommend clearing the browser’s cache and cookies.
