Class Time Standards

What problems are the new class meetings patterns attempting to address?

• Students have encountered scheduling conflicts when trying to choose courses each quarter because of overlapping time blocks. To the degree possible, the new patterns are designed to minimize partial overlaps.
• Classroom scheduling is difficult during peak hours; faculty are often unable to get the rooms they need, particularly technology-enhanced rooms.

What can we do to diminish the severity of these problems?

• Start at a standard time irrespective of when the class might end.
• Shift classes out of the peak time period from 10:30 - 2:30.
• Avoid scheduling discussions during the peak time slots of 10:30 - 2:30.
• Friday is a teaching day!

*Standard lengths in minutes are: 50, 80, 110, 170. Longer classes may be created by combining these standard lengths

To what population of classrooms does this policy apply?

All classes, including discussion sections and classes scheduled in department-owned rooms, must follow these guidelines which were established by Faculty Senate legislation.
