Cardinal Print Frequently Asked Questions

Cardinal Print program information

What is Cardinal Print?
Cardinal Print is a new print services program at Stanford University, providing users with secure devices that print, copy, scan, and fax. Cardinal Print is a partnership between Financial Management Services (FMS) and University IT (UIT).
What are the goals of the Cardinal Print program?

The program has five goals:

  • Improve workflow efficiency
  • Reduce security risks
  • Enhance the end user experience
  • Achieve long-term sustainability goals by reducing the use of paper, ink, toner, and other resources
  • Reduce printing costs for the university
When does the Cardinal Print program start?
The program will become available to the Stanford campus starting in 2019, with the new Redwood City campus as an early adopter.
How will Cardinal Print devices be maintained and supported?
Stanford is partnering with a vendor to manage Cardinal Print services, including maintenance of devices, service repairs, and supplies.
We plan to initiate a new contract for a printer. Should we hold off?
If at all possible, refrain from entering into a new contract for print services until your department/unit joins the Cardinal Print program. If you have an urgent need for a new printer, we recommend you avoid any long-term arrangements, keeping the duration as short as possible. To ensure the Contracts team can review any service or lease agreements you may have, please contact cardinalprint@lists.stanford.edu.

How to use Cardinal Print

How do I use Cardinal Print to print a document?
To print, first queue up the document on your computer. Then go to a Cardinal Print printer and log in with your Stanford ID card or single sign-on credentials to print out the document. This process ensures that your printout is secure, because the document will not print until you log in.
I often print labels and envelopes. Will the Cardinal Print network printers be able to handle that?
Yes, the printers will be able to accommodate labels and envelopes. The devices would simply require an adjustment to meet any different specifications, just as your printers do now.
Can I keep my using my personal printer at work?
If your group uses Cardinal Print, you cannot use a personal printer. The shared printers at the print station replace your personal printer. For staff moving to the Stanford Redwood City campus, the space and power configurations cannot accommodate individual printers.
What should I do if I need to use a specialized printer?
The Cardinal Print program includes shared multifunction devices; for staff moving to the Stanford Redwood City campus, these devices are located at several predetermined anchor points on each floor of each building. A few departments have additional specialized printers by special arrangement. These are not included in the Cardinal Print program, and are the responsibility of these individual departments.
