HUME Center for Writing and Speaking

The George and Leslie Hume Center for Writing and Speaking provides an important intellectual hub for writing and oral communication on Stanford’s campus. At the core of the Hume Center’s services are individual writing and oral communication consultations for students working on any type of writing, presentation assignment, or project. Hume has both writing and oral communication tutors available to work with students at any stage of their process. Along with individual tutorials, Hume offers writing or oral communication workshops for students enrolled in PWR, ITALIC, SIMILE, SLE, Thinking Matters, IntroSems, and WIM classes as well as other courses with writing and multimedia assignments.

Writing Support

The Hume Center offers free one-to-one writing tutorials to students at any stage of the writing process and for any written or digital media assignment. Students can make an appointment via an online appointment system or drop-in during open hours. In addition to our tutoring services, Hume offers tailored support for students applying to Introductory Seminars, taking Writing in the Major courses, or completing Honors theses. Oral Communication Program

The Hume Center's Oral Communication Program can help you develop your skills in spoken expression and presentation by providing personalized assistance to meet your oral communication needs, including reducing speech anxiety, practicing class presentations, and integrating multimedia tools. Hume offers courses in Oral Communication, workshops including T.E.A. and Vocal Yoga, and staffs experienced tutors who can assist at any stage of the writing or speaking process. Other Hume Center Events and Programs

Hume hosts a broad range of performances highlighted by readings during Parents’ Weekend and Admit Weekend. Project WRITE is an outreach program led by Stanford students for East Palo Alto High School students with a passion for writing. The Center recognizes excellence in multimedia presentations in PWR 2 classes with the Lunsford Oral Presentation of Research Award. To foster a lively culture of writing and presentation, Hume provides a meeting and performance space for students working in a variety of forms, including poetry, spoken word, and drama. Whatever your communication challenges and interests may be, Hume offers academic support and a place to share your words and ideas.
