The Stanford University Libraries
The Stanford University Libraries are an integral part of the academic life of Stanford, providing an extraordinary array of resources and services to the community. Stanford students have access to world-class print and digital collections at nearly 20 libraries. Subject librarians are available to provide research consultation to students across all disciplines. Stanford University Libraries, provides you access to a collections of books, journals, films, scores, maps, databases and more.
You can access SearchWorks, the Libraries'official online search tool, as well as browse ejournals, databases, course reserves and do interlibrary borrowing via the Libraries’ website, library.stanford.edu. Individual and group study spaces and Internet access are available for use in the Libraries and computing resources like public computers, digital scanning and editing equipment, support for multi-media projects, geospatial software and social science data and software services and support are made accessible to Stanford students.
Green Library and the Information Center
The Cecil H. Green Library is the largest library on the Stanford campus and holds an expansive and deep research collection in the humanities and social sciences in myriad formats. The following services and collections are available:
Department of Special Collections and University Archives, located in the Field Reading Room of the Bing Wing in Green Library, where students have access to rare and unique materials. There are three distinct divisions in our department: Manuscripts, Rare Books and University Archives. All students, scholars and members of the general public are welcome. The Media and Microtext Center offers unique films collected for research purposes and many thousands of reels of resources on microfilm that have not been digitized. The center has movies, games, microfilm, and many other types of media available for patron use. It is also the site of media course reserves.
The Circulation & Privileges Desk is the main service point in Green where students may retrieve Course Reserves books that faculty and instructors have requested to circulate with brief loan periods. Students may also retrieve items that have been recalled from other borrowers, put on hold, or paged for delivery to Green Library from the auxiliary libraries. The Information Center, located nearby, hosts librarians who meet the reference and instructional needs of students, located in the East Wing of the Green Library. The Information Center also houses current journals, magazines, and newspapers.
Many attractive study spaces for research, learning and reflection can be found in Green Library. The Bender Room, located on the fifth floor, provides comfortable desks and seating, natural light, classics, and popular books in all subjects. The Jonsson Social Sciences Reading Room and the Lane Room for Humanities and Area Studies Resource Center offer research collections, beautiful study spaces, and computers.
Lathrop Library
The Lathrop Library, is a newly renovated library that houses the following services and collections:
Academic Computing Services provides a variety of instructional support services within Lathrop Library, including technology-enhanced classrooms and informal 24-hour study areas equipped with laser printers, wireless Internet access, and software-rich Mac and Windows computers. Lathrop Library also include a mix of individual and group study spaces, laptops areas, computer stations, the Tech Desk, a Multimedia Studio, Mac and Windows cluster computers, ,a Digital Language Lab and the multipurpose flexible classroom.
The Tech Desk provides general technology and multimedia consulting, troubleshooting, multimedia production, poster printing, and multimedia equipment checkout.
The Multimedia Studio, has specialized computers with equipment such as large monitors and software for digital video editing, image scanning and manipulation, and video format conversion.
The Digital Language Lab is Stanford’s multilingual computing and communication hub comprising of three technology enhanced classrooms and an open computer lab. The Lab’s dual boot workstations allow users to work in foreign character sets, record video and voice, and take language assessments in CourseWork, Stanford’s central course management system, administered by the Libraries.
