Why Should I Do Research?

As a research university, Stanford offers many opportunities to complement your coursework and extend your learning beyond the classroom. Compare and contrast different research options and discuss your research interests with professors and advisors for ideas about how to get involved. You never know -- pursuing research may  inspire a capstone project or Honors thesis!

Research Opportunities by Discipline

Sciences/Engineering

Interested in working in a lab? Consider conducting research to gain experience in a laboratory setting, meet mentors in your field, and familiarize yourself with scientific literature.

Social Sciences

Studies in fields such as Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology often require both qualitative and quantitative methods for collecting and analyzing data. Working in a lab or with a research mentor can give you firsthand experience in conducting research in the Social Sciences.

Humanities

Pursuing research in the Humanities often involves identifying a theme or focus, connecting with mentors, and developing a project. Certain grants are specifically designed to support research in the Humanities.

Arts
