Summer Institute for General Management (SIGM) Funding

Are you a humanities or arts major? Discover how to bring your passions to the world by learning business tools.

"SIGM is a great supplement to humanities students. It provides them with knowledge of a world that they may not have been aware of and tools to navigate that world. Business is everywhere, and having business knowledge is incredibly empowering."

            -Christina Medina (TAPS, '15)

What is SIGM?

Stanford's Summer Institute for General Management (SIGM) is a four-week residential program for exceptional college students who major in non-business fields. Taught by Stanford MBA faculty, SIGM participants learn business and management fundamentals, develop resume writing, interviewing, and public speaking skills, engage with business and non-profit leaders, and connect with talented peers from around the world.

SIGM will take place from June 19 to July 16, 2016.

Funding Opportunity

HUMANITIES AND ARTS MAJORS ARE NOW ELIGIBLE FOR FUNDING TO ATTEND SIGM THROUGH SUPPORT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT.Current seniors, juniors, and sophomores who have declared their major in a humanities or arts department will be considered for this funding. Juniors and seniors have priority: sophomores will be considered for any remaining funds once awards have been made to upperclassmen. Students in selected Inderdepartmental Programs will also be considered for funding after majors from the humanities and arts departments have been accepted. Upon acceptance to the program, eligible students will receive information about the amount of the fee that funding will cover (up to the entire program fee of $10,750 based on the student's academic year Financial Aid profile). The program fee includes accommodations, meals, and course materials. Funding for this initiative is limited.

Eligible Departments (and all CS+X Joint Major programs)

Eligible Interdepartmental Program majors (IDPs) - Asian American Studies, African and African American Studies, American Studies, Chicana/o-Latina/o Studies, Comparative Studies, Jewish Studies, Native American Studies, and Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Students majoring in the above IDPs must contact Jeff Schwegman (jschweg@stanford.edu) if they are interested in being considered for this funding.

Why do humanities and arts majors enroll in SIGM? Here is what past participants say:

"I applied to SIGM because I wanted to think about hiring practices and recruitment in the context of the tech world, where racial diversity is virtually nonexistent. Now I work for Google as a member of their People Operations team."

-Shelby Sinclair (Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, '15)

"I am passionate about academia and have dedicated my life to empowering students through the transformative force of education. I applied to SIGM because I eventually hope to start my own education-centric business."

             -Melissa Gordon (English, '16)

"SIGM gave me an understanding of business vocabulary and concepts and a new interest in analyzing businesses as social actors. Next year, I will work at a good governance NGO in Kampala, Uganda, and afterward I hope to explore organizations in the Bay Area that aim to bring about social impact. SIGM gave me the confidence to explore this avenue."

-Teo Lamiot (French and Political Science, '15)
