Medical Student Entrance Requirements

The following immunizations are required for all medical students. You will need to send Vaden a copy of your official immunization records, results of any applicable blood tests (titers), and your Tuberculosis Testing form. You can download an  immunization form to be completed by a healthcare professional. We will also accept an official immunization record. The Tuberculosis Testing form will be accessible as you complete the entrance medical forms via the following link:

Reminder: the deadline to complete the entrance medical requirements for medical students is July 31.

Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR)

Stanford requires written documentation of one of the following:

  • 2 doses of live vaccines MMR/MMRV or

  • Laboratory evidence of immunity1

Varicella

Stanford requires written documentation of one of the following:

  • 2 doses of Varicella vaccine or

  • Laboratory evidence of immunity1

Hepatitis B

Stanford requires written documentation of one of the following:

  • Three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine or

  • Laboratory evidence of natural immunity (have had past hepatitis B infection)1 This must include results for Hepatitis Surface Antibody, Hepatitis B Core Antibody and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen

1Equivocal antibody titers are not considered sufficient to protect from infection and a complete vaccine series will be administered as recommended by the CDC-ACIP.

Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)

Stanford requires written documentation of the following:

  • Tdap: Booster must be within past 10 years, regardless of last Td vaccine

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

Stanford requires written documentation that one of the following tests has been performed within the six month period before your arrival at Stanford:

  • Tuberculosis blood test (accepted tests include QuantifERON-TB Gold or T-SPOT-TB tests only) or

  • two-step Tuberculosis skin test (PPD)

If the results of the TB test are positive, or if you have had a positive test in the past, you must provide a written report from a chest x-ray performed in the U.S. or Canada within six months before your arrival at Stanford. The chest x-ray report must be submitted no later than September 25.

Fees

Students are responsible for the cost of all entrance requirements. The School of Medicine, however, will cover the costs of the second and third Hepatitis B injections for medical students who are unable to complete the series prior to arriving to Stanford.

Recommended Vaccines

In addition to the required immunizations we also recommend that you consider the following immunizations if applicable:

  • Hepatitis A vaccine.
  • Human Papillomavirus vaccine.
  • Meningococcal Vaccine.
  • Pneumococcal Vaccine (if you have a history of asthma or other lung diseases, have immune issues, or are a smoker).
  • A completed polio vaccine series.
