My doctoral research examines the relationship between market and religion. I am concerned with how material culture and commercial practices shape religion at the same time as religious groups appropriate market economy, and how religious groups interact with and define themselves in relation to other groups through the market. My PhD project focuses on the archaeology of early Muslim urban communities through field research in Jordan. Using archival and ethnographic research, I am also examining labor and commercialization in the 18-19th century in the Arab Gulf States and their use of heritage practices in relation to ethnic difference, the environment, and commerce.
