With mixed feelings I announce that Maria Grandinette will retire from Stanford Libraries as of March 22 after 20 years on campus.   I am sad to say farewell, but I am happy for her as she starts a new chapter of her life.  She will be heading east to be closer to her parents, and in a few months she will begin her new position as Head of the Preservation Department at Princeton University Libraries.

Please join us in celebration of Maria’s career at Stanford and in thanking her for her many contributions to the care of our physical collections.   The party is this coming Monday:

Maria first came to us in the early 1990s as a Mellon Preservation Intern in the Preservation Department.  She subsequently was hired by the Hoover Institution as Head of Preservation, and eventually returned to SUL to head the Conservation Treatment Unit.   Maria has had a role in a remarkably varied array of SUL initiatives and challenges:  El Niño flood recovery, SAL3 environment and preservation design (the heart and soul), rare books move into renovated Field Room, international exhibits of SUL special collections treasures, collections’ care outreach throughout SUL, and environmental monitoring and pest management.    Her advocacy and creativity for recruiting seasoned conservators and nurturing new conservators has served us exceedingly well.   We wish her all the best as she continues from here.
