Preventive Mental Health Services

Under the supervision with Alejandro Martinez, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and Senior Associate Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services at Vaden Health Center (student health center at Stanford University), preventive mental health services are provided to medical students. Developed from the decade of experiences working with graduate students, Dr. Martinez works in four areas: 1) stress coping skills, 2) psychological resiliency skills, 3) interpersonal and communication skills, and 4) physical well-health practices. In order to address these and to be outside of the regular educational system to avoid concern about confidentiality, Dr. Martinez conducts workshops on these topics and provides group and individual services to students. Since stressors differ in each medical school year, workshops are conducted with each of the medical school classes of students, preclinical and clinical. These services are beyond those routinely provided by student health services, and focus on the experiences in medical school. Five tailored workshops are delivered every quarter for each class (1, 2, 3, 4, 5+), and individual counseling are also available. For more information, please feel free to contact Dr. Alejandro Martinez (A.Martinez@stanford.edu).
