Lars Osterberg is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine; the Chief of General Internal Medicine at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System; and a CHP/PCOR associate. His research focuses on vulnerable populations and patient access to care; innovations in practices of medical care; and patient adherence to medications.
Osterberg's current research projects include a VA Cooperative trial assessing the use of a point-of-care INR testing device for patients on warfarin performing self-testing of anticoagulation, and a sub-study evaluating the informed consent process. He has published a review on patient adherence to medication in the New England journal of Medicine and a book chapter on medication adherence and hypertension. He is the medical director of the Stanford-affiliated Arbor Free Clinic and serves on the advisory board of Opportunity Health Partners, an organization dedicated to improving the health and social welfare of the homeless on the San Francisco Peninsula. He has completed a needs assessment of the homeless in Palo Alto, with a focus on health and social problems and access to medical care.
He received an undergraduate degree in bioengineering from UC-Berkeley, an MD from UC-Davis, and a Master's in Public Health from UC-Berkeley. He also completed an internal medicine residency at Stanford.
