Degree Programs

Applicants to the graduate program in ICME must apply either to the M.S. program or to the Ph.D. program, but not to both. Beginning in 2014-15, the choice for applicants not admitted to the Ph.D. program to be re-considered for M.S. program admission will not be available.
Every year a number of students from the ICME Masters program will qualify to enter the Ph.D. program by successfully completing the Ph.D. qualifying exams and aligning with a research advisor. Entering the M.S. program is by no means a guaranteed path to a Ph.D. in ICME, and subsequent admission into the Ph.D. program is far from assured. However, very strong students with insufficient background for Ph.D. admission may choose to enter the M.S. program to gain a thorough understanding of the core courses, to demonstrate academic potential at Stanford, and perhaps to align with a faculty member in research. All of these factors, along with passing the qualifying exams, can contribute to a strengthened application to a Ph.D. program at Stanford.
Admission to the Ph.D. program is much more competitive than to the M.S. program, so students interested primarily in a Master's degree should apply to the M.S. program.
Master of Science Program
Currently, we offer five tracks for the M.S. program (Computational Medicine track is not available yet). Please see detailed descriptions of the tracks in the degree programs page. Applicants choose the track of their choice on the application under the “Academic Interest” field, and the application is only considered for that specific track. All tracks are designed to be completed in two years.
Note: MS applications are restricted to autumn quarter admissions only.
Ph.D. Program
Ph.D. applicants do not have track choices. You may indicate your areas of academic interest for informational purposes only. Applications are only accepted for autumn quarter.
Ph.D. Admit Weekend
Ph.D. Admit Weekend is scheduled for February 16 and 17, 2017.
HCP Applicants
The Honors Cooperative Program (HCP), through the Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD), permits employees of member companies to pursue graduate study on a part-time basis. HCP students are fully matriculated graduate students of Stanford University with all privileges, rights and responsibilities.

Honors Cooperative Program (HCP) applicants are admitted to the program in all three quarters only to the general CME track. Admission to other tracks is restricted to fall quarter admissions only.
This program cannot be completed entirely on-line; campus attendance will be required.

Additional Degree/Change of Degree Programs (Grad Auth)
Note: applications to DS and MCF tracks are restricted to autumn quarter admissions only.
The M.S. program in ICME offers both a terminal degree option as well as a track to the CME-Ph.D. program. Entering the M.S. program is by no means a guaranteed path to a Ph.D. in ICME, and subsequent admission into the Ph.D. program is far from assured. However, very strong students with insufficient background for Ph.D. admission may choose to enter the MS program to gain a thorough understanding of the core courses, to demonstrate academic potential at Stanford, and perhaps to align with a faculty member in research. All of these factors, along with passing the qualifying exams, can contribute to a strengthened application to a Ph.D. program in Computational and Mathematical Engineering.
A fee of $150 will be automatically assessed by the Registrar's Office when the offer of admission to M.S. or Ph.D. is accepted and a new program is opened.

Supporting document requirements are the same as regular application:
1. A new Statement of Purpose - concise, focused, and well written.
2. Three (3) letters of recommendation- you may not forward letters from an earlier application. Letters from your initial Stanford application will not be accepted.
3. Current Stanford transcript as well as transcripts from other institutions attended prior to Stanford for one or more years.
4. GPA calculation: Maximum GPA at Stanford for most students is 4.3. It is best to use the GPA that is reflected in Axess as of the application deadline. You may also follow the directions from the Registrar's website.
For your GPA for classes taken outside of Stanford, use the maximum for the school as is defined on the back of the transcript and if a cumulative GPA is not provided, please calculate one using the same general criteria outlined on the Registrar's website.
5. All applicants are required to take the General GRE test. All applicants must provide GRE scores from an examination taken within the last 5 years of the application deadline.
*Please note that reapplying after not receiving an admission offer is not recommended and it is very rare that admissions decisions are changed.
Coterm Applicants
Note: applications to DS and MCF tracks are restricted to autumn quarter admissions only.
The application and supporting documents/materials must be received by the deadline.
*DO NOT APPLY ONLINE, submit the coterm application and other materials directly to ICME.

Additional materials:

3. Current Stanford transcript (unofficial, with earned unit total and GPA listed) as well as transcripts from any classes taken outside of Stanford.
4. All applicants are required to take the General GRE test. Include a photocopy of the ETS score report with your application, in addition to having your score reported directly to the University by ETS.*Scores need to be sent to "Graduate Admissions" and not "Undergraduate Admissions"
