Overview
Learn how to maintain positive relationships yet get things done in a project-based matrix environment in which you lack direct authority. This course demonstrates effective techniques and provides plenty of practice in using them. You'll acquire knowledge and skills you can leverage to negotiate priorities, get people to work together productively, manage highly charged situations, resolve performance problems, and keep projects on track despite the challenges that inevitably arise.
Topics Include
- Influence decisions others make that are critical to your success and your project's or program's success
- Hold people accountable through means other than hierarchical authority
- Communicate performance problems in a fact-based, non-punishing manner that encourages mutual problem solving
- Appropriately diagnose the root causes of performance problems in order to plan immediate and effective corrective action
- Gain commitments from project team members who are not direct reports, so as to meet expectations and fulfill agreements
- Deal with strong emotions that can arise among customers, partners, employees, and managers
- Reduce the conflict inherent in a project-based matrix environment
- Promote higher productivity, efficiency, and performance

Stephen Barley's research focuses on the social and organizational implications of technological change and on the technical and professional workforce. His book, Gurus, Hired Guns and Warm Bodies, (Princeton University Press, co-authored with Gideon Kunda) is an ethnography that documents the experiences of software developers, technical writers, IT experts and other technical professionals who have left full-time employment to become freelance contractors. Barley was co-chair for the National Research Council and the National Academy of Science's committee on the changing occupational structure in the United States, which published The Changing Nature of Work in 1999.
John Boose is a Professional Associate at IPS, teaching on campus at Stanford University and delivering courses at company sites around the globe. Boose is president of the Strategic Leadership Group, consulting with a wide variety of companies throughout the world. He has been the Robert Tointon Distinguished Professor of Technology Management at the Monfort College of Business, University of Northern Colorado. Boose has served on several corporate boards and currently holds a director position at Southco Corporation in Philadelphia, PA. In his career, Boose also spent 24 years at Hewlett-Packard in various executive management positions including president of Colorado Memory Systems.
