Leadership

As a core component of our mission, the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions strives to enhance leadership skills in existing ocean leaders as well as establish strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills in the next generation of blue planet pioneers.

Leader Engagement

Introduction

Practical solutions to ocean challenges are nothing more than good ideas if they lack strong leaders to implement them. As a core component of our mission, the Center for Ocean Solutions strives to enhance leadership skills in existing ocean leaders as well as establish strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills in the next generation of blue planet pioneers. The Center does this by fostering development of interdisciplinary problem-solving skills for graduate students and early career professionals through our MARINE and Early Career Fellow programs.

Engaging current and future ocean leaders of all levels and at all career stages—from masters students to city and county officials to legislators—is an underpinning of our work. The Center’s leadership development, engagement, communication and education staff work with each initiative to build outreach and education capability into every project.

The Center also broadens the reach of its research by engaging decisionmakers in productive dialogues. Whether through one-on-one meetings or more formal workshops, our goal is to develop and strengthen the linkages between our research and decisionmakers’ needs to promote measurable changes on the water.

MARINE

The Monterey Area Research Institutions' Network for Education (MARINE) enhances ocean-focused graduate education in the Monterey Bay region through inter-institutional networking and interdisciplinary leadership development programs.

We are a Center for Ocean Solutions collaboration with seven Monterey Bay area academic campuses that fosters inter-institutional connections through short-courses, seminars, workshops and cross-campus networking events.
