In response to nationwide protests against police brutality, we're sharing powerful interviews with previous guests including writer , poet , and singer-songwriter . Check out episode 11 here:

  4. So: When I said that "thousands of people of color are killed by police each year" I should have been more specific. Police report hundreds of POC killed each year, data shows approx 1,000 POC dying in police encounters each year, and we don't have numbers on deaths in custody.

  5. If we look at just police encounters alone, estimates that almost 1,800 people died in police encounters last year. If we give a low estimate of how many people are dying in police custody(numbers the gov refuses to release) we have over 2,000 people a yr.

  6. Also, the above numbers are not the people who die in police custody. Only where it has been reported by police that the person in custody was killed by police. When we think of victims like Sandra Bland, we know the numbers of people killed by police is much higher than 1,100.

  7. Let me also add that it is important to know that approximately HALF of the people killed by police are disabled. To be disabled and Black or Indigenous puts you at highest risk for dying in a police encounter.

  8. The numbers we have are just from KNOWN police killings - based on what police departments themselves report. We know the numbers are larger than that. We know there are people whose deaths are uncounted - people whose families will have no chance at justice.

  9. Black and Indigenous people are 3-4 x more likely to be killed by police than white people and are even more likely to experience various types of physical violence in encounters with police. And they are LESS likely than white people to be armed in these encounters.

  10. On the BBC today I said that thousands of people are killed by police every year. Let me be more specific abt that number. Over 1,000 people have been killed by police in America every year. Last year, there were only 27 days in which someone wasn't killed

Psst. That awful video in which a white person is getting their skull cracked by a cop? That happens to black people ALL THE TIME. Doesn't usually make the news. That visceral rage you feel? The need to jump in, stop it, do something? Imagine feeling like that your whole life.

All of the brutality toward protestors caught on video is making pretty clear that abusive officers aren’t afraid of being taped because they aren’t afraid of consequences.

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Bari but I’m sure she’s absolutely sparkly. Many people I know are charmed by her and if you’re one of them I want you to know it continues to erode my opinion of you. It’s lazy and selfish. Grow a fucking spine.

in the same spot where the video from buffalo was shot, cops were taking a knee yesterday. that’s why I don’t want to hear a fucking word about police showing solidarity for the protestors. a fucking word!

David Oyelowo says, after the cast & crew of 's 'Selma' wore 'I Can't Breathe' t-shirts in remembrance of Eric Garner, Academy members said they were "stirring shit" and wouldn't vote for the film as "it wasn't their place to do that." Full story:

I’m seeing people ask things like “But if there are no police who will go after RAPISTS???” and well I have some very bad news for those folks
