Description: The intent of the Ph.D. reading exam is to assess the candidate’s understanding of secondary academic texts (criticism, history, analysis, etc.) in his/her academic field, and to assess general reading comprehension of journalistic texts that are readily accessible in the Francophone Press.

TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE EXAM BRING THE FOLLOWING TO BUILDING 260, ROOM 315:

• Two academic ARTICLES (of at least 10 pages in length) in French related to your field (not literary texts, nor books used for French Language courses).
• Please write your name, department, and email address on a sheet of paper and secure to TWO LEGIBLE COPIES OF EACH ARTICLE with a paper clip. This must be brought to Building 260 - Room 315.

This reading exam is not a translation exam, though you may be asked to translate a short key passage that is essential for the global comprehension of the text.

The test is composed of two parts. Part I consists of comprehension questions based on variety of texts, generally from recent newspapers or magazine articles. Part II consists of comprehension questions based on an article submitted by the candidate. The intent of the exam is to assess comprehension of main arguments, cohesion of ideas, examples, counter-examples, references, etc.

You may use a book dictionary. Please bring your own French/English dictionary.
