International Early Career Scientists
Twenty-eight international early career scientists are establishing independent research programs in 12 countries with HHMI support. The scientists, selected because they are or have the potential to become scientific leaders, receive $650,000 over five years and become a part of the HHMI community. At the time of their selection in 2012, the initial group of international early career scientists had led their own laboratories for less than seven years.
Senior International Research Scholars
Thirteen HHMI senior international research scholars lead labs in seven countries worldwide. The scholars, scientific leaders who were selected among applicants who had been funded through previous HHMI international programs, received five-year, $500,000 awards in 2012.
The KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH)
The KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) in Durban, South Africa, is a groundbreaking collaboration between HHMI and the University of KwaZulu-Natal. K-RITH’s mission is to conduct outstanding basic science research on tuberculosis and HIV, translate the scientific findings into new tools to control both diseases, and expand the educational opportunities in the region.
