SCI's community partnerships aim to raise awareness and improve outcomes in traditionally underserved populations
About the Community Engagement Program
Are you concerned about cancer rates in your community and searching for answers?
Are you planning a community event or activity promoting cancer awareness?
Are you interested in conducting research with a SCI investigator?
SCI's Community Engagement Program engages with local organizations working in medically underserved communities to promote targeted cancer prevention strategies and reduce outcome disparities.
The program's services include:
- Event sponsorship and community-specific educational materials
- Mini-grant program
- Support for projects in our catchment area to identify and address cancer health disparities
- A committee of community representatives to helps guide SCI researchers on how best to work with specific patient communities, and design patient education and clinical trials relevant the needs and sensitivities of the target population.
- Community ambassador program to train people to do cancer awareness education in their communities.

Educational Outreach
Jade Ribbon Campaign/Asian Liver Center at Stanford
Hepatitis B accounts for 80 percent of all liver cancer cases. Nearly 15 percent of all Asian Americans areinfected with the virus; of these individuals, one in four will eventually die of liver cancer. The Asian LiverCenter at Stanford is the only non-profit organization in the United States dedicated to addressing thisdisproportionately high incidence of hepatitis B and liver cancer among Asians and Asian Americans. In 2001,the center launched the Jade Ribbon Campaign, which brings together 400 community organizations in ajoint effort to educate local Asian and Pacific Islander (API) American populations about the risks they face.
SUNSPORT Skin Protection Program
SUNSPORT is Stanford’s innovative program to reduce the incidence of skin cancer and other sun-relateddamage among outdoor athletes and recreation enthusiasts. SUNSPORT (Stanford University Network forSun Protection, Outreach, Research and Teamwork) is a partnership among the Stanford Department ofDermatology, the Stanford Cancer Institute, Stanford Healthcare and Stanford Athletics to provide a risk-awareness and sun-protection education to Stanford student-athletes, athletic faculty and staff, fans andsupporters, and the community at large.

Free Patient Support Services
Stanford Health Library
Sponsored by Stanford Health Care, Stanford Health Library provides scientifically based medical information to help people make informed decisions about their health and health care. Services are free.
Cancer Supportive Care Program
Provides free educational and support activities to all patients (regardless of where they get their care) designed to ease the side-effects of cancer and its treatment and to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their caregivers. These activities include psychosocial support, exercise, complementary / alternative modality classes and counseling on nutrition, fatigue reduction and pain management. All activities are free and open to the general public.
Bay Area Cancer Connections
(breast and cervical cancer) - offers a variety of services to help breast and cervical cancer patients and survivors get the information and support that they need to make treatment decisions and to address the emotional and social challenges of their diagnosis.
