Message from the Chief

Welcome to the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, a progressive center of excellence dedicated to advances in laboratory and clinical science, state-of-the art clinical care, and the education of future leaders in digestive and liver diseases. The Division is renowned for its pioneers in fundamental research and we continue this tradition with our wide array of ongoing investigative studies, including translational research dedicated to improving the lives of patients with complex gastrointestinal and liver disease. The education and training of future leaders in our specialty has and always will be an integral part of our mission.

The Division is comprised of 15 full-time faculty, two emeritus faculty, eight clinician educators, two additional educators, and our talented research and administrative staff members. Faculty, fellows, and trainees actively collaborate in diverse research projects with other talented investigators in the Department of Medicine, and other schools and departments across the University, as well as outside Stanford.

Faculty members provide state-of-the-art clinical care at our multidisciplinary Digestive Health Center at Stanford, the Outpatient Surgery Center in Redwood City, the Palo Alto Veteran’s Administration Health Care System, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.  In all locations, trainees at all levels learn to care for patients with digestive and liver diseases.

For the last 30 years the Division’s fellowship program has had an outstanding record of success, producing trainees who have moved on to prominent faculty and leadership positions. Mentorship and enthusiasm for innovative research and teaching by our faculty are key aspects of the success of our Division in preparing trainees for productive careers in basic or clinical research and novel pathways including device and systems innovation.
