Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Symptoms

There are a wide range of symptoms in patients who have atrial fibrillation.  Some patients are truly asymptomatic, without any noticeable limitations. 

In contrast, there are patients who appear to be much more symptomatic. Some patients recognize that they are in atrial fibrillation, with symptoms that may include:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Increased heart rate
  • Decreased energy
  • Increased fatigue
  • Possible feeling of greater irritability during episodes of atrial fibrillation
  • Less stamina during periods of increased activity (like carrying objects up the stairs), or shortness of breath

Some patients feel the atrial fibrillation more when lying on their side, particularly on the left side. Some are more aware of atrial fibrillation at rest, and others are more aware with exertion.
