Coterminal Degree

The coterminal degree program allows Stanford undergraduates to pursue the REEES MA degree while completing their bachelor's degree(s). Coterms spend an additional year of study at Stanford beyond the usual four years. Juniors and seniors may apply.

University requirements for coterminal degrees are described in the Stanford Bulletin

How to Apply

Application deadline:  January 10, 2017

Application: Coterminal degree program applicants submit a paper-based application, the procedures and application forms for which may be found on the Registrar's Office Coterminal degree page.

The admissions standards and process are largely the same for coterms as for external applicants to the MA program.  For a complete list of admissions requirements, please see our How to Apply page.

Coterminal degree applicants must meet the following additional application requirements:

  1. Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (B).
  2. Submit letters of recommendation from Stanford faculty (one may be from a language instructor).
  3. Submit a program of study that outlines, by quarter, the schedule of courses the student plans to complete toward the MA degree. (The same courses may not be counted to meet both undergraduate and graduate requirements.  Courses taken up to three quarters prior to the first graduate quarter are eligible to be used to meet the course requirements for the MA degree.)
  4. Meet with the CREEES Associate Director to review the program of study.
