Family Medicine Core Clerkship (MED 301A)
Duration: 4 weeks

The Family Medicine Core Clerkship teaches the management of diseases commonly encountered in the ambulatory care setting. Emphasis is placed on patient-centered, efficient, cost-effective medical care of men, women and children of all ages in a variety of settings. Prevention, managed care, and cultural competence are stressed. Didactic workshops are conducted at SUMC and clinic sessions are spent attending patients at ambulatory sites.

Ambulatory Internal Medicine Clerkship (MED 313A)
Duration: 4 weeks

The Ambulatory Medicine clerkship (AMC) combines clinic sessions in both general internal medicine and subspecialty medicine. It includes assigned readings, small group discussions, computer-assisted drills, posing and answering clinical questions with critical appraisal of the literature, and problem-based cases to reinforce principles and complexities of diagnosis and management. The didactics emphasize preventive medicine, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrinological disorders, and common clinical presentations in outpatient practice.

Selective I

Continuity of Care Clerkship (MED 310A)
Duration: 9 months

In the Continuity of Care Clerkship, students work with a preceptor in any field of medicine, including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and the subspecialties. They are released from other clerkships for one afternoon a week for a total of four afternoons per period. Three afternoon for students to report to clinic, and one for a didactic session consisting of student and MD presentations. Students participating in this clerkship work with one faculty preceptor and his/her patients for 9 months. This continuity experience allows students to establish a mentoring relationship with their preceptor, to see a cohort of patients repeatedly, gain insight into patient care and chronic disease management over time, and develop a deeper understanding of their speciality of choice.

Elective

Clinical Elective in Family Medicine (FAMMED 398A)

Duration: available periods 1-12
Director: Erika Schillinger, MD

The Clinical Elective in Family Medicine provides an opportunity for a student in the clinical years to have a clinical experience in one of the fields of Family Medicine, of a quality and duration to be decided upon by the student and a faculty preceptor in Family Medicine. Please note: Students cannot add 398A clerkships directly to their fishbowl schedules through the regular shuffles.
