Request for letters of intent from Stanford University School of Medicine faculty with University-tenure Line (UTL), Medical Center Line (MCL), Non-tenure Line Research (NTLR) and Clinician Educator (CE) faculty appointments (see eligibility) and from Intermountain Healthcare Investigators for travel grants to explore potential areas of collaboration and joint investigations with designated contacts at the other organization.

Letters of intent may be submitted at any time. Applicants will be notified within 21 days of submission.

Key Objective
The purpose of the Intermountain Healthcare-Stanford Collaboration Travel Grant Program is foster affiliation between Intermountain Healthcare and Stanford Medicine by providing travel support for investigators to further explore potential areas of collaboration and joint investigation with designated contacts at the other organization. The application process is meant to be as easy as possible to facilitate rapid collaboration between investigators at the two institutions.
Amount of award:
If selected, funds will be designated to reimburse travel expenses, such as round trip coach airfare, accommodations, per diem meals, ground transportation, and parking. The travel award will be available for a single trip within 6 months of the award date; travel must be completed with documentation submitted in that timeframe and within 2 months of completing the travel. All unexpended funds will be forfeited, if not spent within the 6-month period.
To receive travel reimbursement, the grantee must submit:
- Receipts or documentation for valid travel expenses
- Collaboration trip report (1-2 pages), including:
- Outcomes of meeting(s)
- Learnings
- Barriers to collaboration, if any
- Anticipated next steps
Please note that travel awardees may be contacted by the program office in the future, after completion of the travel, to inquire as to further outcomes of the collaboration.
- Potential Principal Investigators, either from Stanford Medicine** or Intermountain Healthcare, can submit a letter of intent for travel support to further explore collaborations, which may lead to a joint research proposal.
- **Stanford School of Medicine with University-tenure line (UTL), Medical Center Line (MCL) , Non-tenure line-Research (NTL-R), or Clinician Educators (CE) faculty appointments
- Applicants who have received the travel award in the past may re-apply for support for additional travel, but should include in their application a justification for additional travel. It is expected that successful collaboration efforts resulting from the travel grants will be followed by application for funding from other sources, which may include an Intermountain Healthcare-Stanford Collaboration Grant Request for Proposals.
Purpose:
Background

Intermountain Healthcare has a strong performance improvement history in key clinical programs that cross the spectrum of care (primary care through tertiary care) with a mission of “helping people live the healthiest lives possible.”
Stanford University School of Medicine is a world-wide leader in science and research. As a premier research medical school, Stanford School of Medicine is home to faculty who are continuously exploring and developing new technologies that test the limits of science. The mission to “improve health through leadership, diversity and a collaborative approach to discovery” continues to result in breakthrough findings that benefit patients worldwide.
Investigators at both Intermountain Healthcare and Stanford University have a unique opportunity to improve the underlying science of medicine for the improvement of patient care, on a large scale and within a healthcare delivery system, through ongoing performance improvement, investigation, innovation, and/or education, all focused on healthcare transformation. Through the Intermountain-Stanford Travel Grant Program, investigators from both institutions are encouraged to explore potential areas of clinical research and innovation, which may lead to deeper collaboration and the possibility for further funding through the Intermountain-Stanford Grant Program.
Review Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Proposed area(s) of exploration
- Objectives of the proposed meeting
- Potential impact(s) to health care delivery transformation
LETTER OF INTENT SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
Please submit one PDF file containing the following (in the order listed below) via email attachment to intermountain-stanford-collab@stanford.edu. (Letters of intent may be submitted anytime.)
The file name should be: Last name_Intermountain-Stanford_LOI.pdf
Institutional representatives: not applicable. You do not have to generate a PDRF form or submit your Letter of Intent through your Research Process Manager (RPM) in the Research Management Group (RMG).
- A cover sheet that includes the following information:
- Intermountain-Stanford Collaboration Travel Grant
- Title/topic of exploration
- Requestor: Name, title, department, Institution, email, and phone number
- Estimated amount of funding requested
- Trip Specific Aims (1-2 pages), including:
- Area(s) of exploration
- Primary meeting participants (Name, title, department, institution)
- Outcomes from prior discussions between Stanford and Intermountain in this area of exploration. Applicants are encouraged to use phone and video for initial exploratory discussions.
- Estimated Travel Budget: Please note that award will reimburse for actual, allowable expenditures, including round-trip coach airfare, accommodations for 1-2 nights (depending on number of meetings), per diem meals, ground transportation, and parking.
NOTE: Applications that do not comply with the requirements will not be considered for review.
