Dear Senior Physics majors,
The deadline for applying to complete a Senior Thesis is Friday, November 20 before 4pm. Note also that the approval and completion of a Senior Thesis is one of the requirements for the Honors Program. A Senior Thesis can also be done independently of the Honors program if you do not otherwise qualify for Honors, but nevertheless this requires the Senior Thesis application form. This link has detailed information about the...
To all members of the Stanford Physics Department:
On October 9, 2015, the news broke that a 6-month investigation by UC Berkeley had determined that Geoff Marcy, a faculty member in the Berkeley Astronomy Department, violated their campus sexual harassment policies between 2004 and 2010. We are writing to you to express our deep concern and support for the victims of this harassment, and our respect for those members of the Berkeley community who reported this behavior. We are...
Monika Schleier-Smith has been selected as a 2015 Hellman Faculty Fellow. The Hellman Faculty Scholar fund was established to provide support for junior faculty research. Congratulations to Monika!
Stanley G. Wojcicki has received the 2015 W.K.H. Panofsky Prize, awarded annually to recognize and encourage outstanding achievements in experimental particle physics. Congratulations to Stan!

Prof. Shoucheng Zhang has been named a recipient of the 2015 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics, one of the oldest and most prestigious science awards in the United States. Zhang shares the 2015 physics recognition with Charles Kane and Eugene Mele, both of the University of Pennsylvania, for their “groundbreaking theoretical contributions leading to the discovery of a new class of materials called topological insulators, and for their prediction of specific...
Stanford Professors Aharon Kapitulnik, Zhi-Xun Shen and Tony Heinz are among 11 recipients of the Moore Foundation Awards, given to Experimental Investigaors in Quatum Materials. See press release for additional details.
In Thinking About the Universe, freshmen will explore profound questions about the cosmos – its beginnings, structure, extent and fate – with a philosopher, an experimental physicist and a theoretical physicist as their guides. The course is one of the new offerings in the Thinking Matters program, which is designed to help students transition from high school to college by introducing them to a multidisciplinary approach to learning that emphasizes critical analysis,...
