Andrew Brooks is a PhD candidate in political science at Stanford University, with concentrations in comparative politics and international relations. His research focuses on the impact of long-term historic determinants of development, stability, and civil-military relations.
My dissertation focuses on the impact of Colonial Armies on development in former British African colonies. How did the ethnically based recruitment practices impact future civil-military relations? How did differences in the rank-and-file and officer corps impact the political behavior of the army? I argue that biased recruitment practices led to underdevelopment, civil wars, and military coups.
