Prospective Student-Athletes

This section of our compliance website is designed to provide you with access to information that will be useful to you as you make your decision to attend Stanford University. You will find that we have provided a wealth of information; behind it all is our commitment to continue the Stanford tradition of excellence, both on and off the field of competition.

This website is intended to serve as a comprehensive resource for you but, if you have any unanswered questions, we hope that you will not hesitate to contact the Stanford Compliance Services Office or the Stanford coaches for information about a specific sport. Go Cardinal!

1. What is a "prospective student-athlete?"

A prospective student-athlete is another term for a recruit. Any student, regardless of whether they are participating in athletics, who has entered the ninth grade of high school is deemed a prospective student-athlete (7th grade for Men’s Basketball).

2. What is the NCAA Eligibility Center?

The NCAA Eligibility Center determines the academic eligibility of high school students as they enter college for their freshman year. In addition, the Eligibility Center determines and ensures any student (high school and junior college transfer) who is going to enter a four-year institution is an amateur student-athlete.

More information regarding the NCAA Eligibility Center can be found at www.eligibilitycenter.org.

3. When should I register with the NCAA Eligibility Center?

High school students who have entered their second semester of their junior year should begin the registration process with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Once registered, you should have your high school send an up-to-date transcript to the Eligibility Center, along with ACT/SAT test scores from the testing agencies. The Eligibility Center will provide you with a preliminary evaluation of your eligibility status. You are unable to come to Stanford on an Official Visit until you have registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

4. Why didn't a coach return my phone call?

Per NCAA regulations, most coaches are not permitted to call prospective student-athletes until July 1 following completion of the prospect's junior year in high school.* However, a high school student may call a coach at any time, regardless of their year in high school. Although a coach may not be able to return the call, prospects may call at their own expense at any time.

5. Can I visit campus at any time?

High school students are welcome to visit Stanford University and the Department of Athletics. However, there are certain dates throughout the year that coaches and other athletics staff members are not able to have contact with prospects. These dates are called Dead Periods and often surround National Letter of Intent signing periods and sport championships. Please contact the coaching staff of your particular sport prior to arriving to campus to ensure you and the coaches may have contact.

Are You A Booster?

Stanford University is proud to have your loyal support, dedication, and enthusiasm for Stanford Athletics. As we strive for continued excellence, we must always seek the highest standard of ethical conduct. With your assistance and cooperation, we are confident we can continue to meet this goal.

Many times individuals are unsure if they are considered “Boosters” or not. Below we have designed a quiz to help you determine if you are a booster. There are numerous ways to become a booster and it would be impossible to list all of them here. Therefore, if you have any questions, please ASK BEFORE YOU ACT!

1. Are you a member of the Buck/Cardinal Club?
2. Have you given money or a donation to an individual Stanford sport or any portion of the Stanford Athletics Department at any time in the past?
3. Are you a corporate sponsor of the Athletic Department?
4. Have you volunteered your time to the Athletic Department or any individual sport?
5. Are you a member of any Stanford booster organization (12th Man, 6th Man Club, Fast Break Club, etc)?

If you answered "YES" to any of these questions, you are a representative of athletics interest, also known as a “Booster.”
