STANFORD, Calif. – No. 10 Stanford men's rowing will compete in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, to be held Friday through Sunday, June 2-4, at Lake Natoma near Sacramento.
The Cardinal, under the direction of head coach
Craig Amerkhanian, will field a varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight at the national championship regatta. Stanford is one of 24 crews (17 automatic qualifiers and seven at-large berths) from around the nation to qualify for the IRAs. A total of 24 boats will compete for the varsity eight and second varsity eight national championship, while 20 crews will race for the third varsity eight title.
Stanford's varsity eight will begin competition at IRA's in the fourth heat on Friday at 9 a.m. PT, facing Wisconsin, Princeton, Harvard, Drexel and St. Joseph's. The second varsity eight will race in the second heat on Friday at 9:40 a.m. PT against California, Northeastern, Cornell, Pennsylvania and Santa Clara. The third varsity eight will race in the first heat on Friday at 10:10 a.m. PT against Washington, Navy, Northeastern and St. Joseph's.
Stanford is coming off a third-place finish in the varsity eight at the Pac-12 Championships, held on the same Lake Natoma course. The Cardinal finished behind top-ranked California and No. 2 Washington on May 14.
Stanford is one of four Pac-12 crews to qualify for the IRA Championships, along with Washington, California and Oregon State.
Racing on the course at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, New Jersey, Stanford finished eighth overall in last season's IRA Championships. The Cardinal varsity eight placed second in the Petite Final to finish eighth overall. The varsity four placed second in the fourth-level final.
Stanford captured the Clayton W. Chapman Trophy at last year's IRA Championships, recognizing the Most Improved Team, in the national regatta. The Cardinal finished eighth last season, after placing 18th the year before. Stanford has placed in the top 20 of the varsity eight every year since the results go back to 1999.
