Staff Responsibilities
The staff of this office perform the following responsibilities.
- Set and promulgate research policy
- Review requests for waivers for Indirect Cost Rates and Principal Investigatorship
- Approve appointments and salaries of the University's 700+ Academic Staff-Research members. See RPH: Policy and Procedures for Appointment and Promotion: Academic Staff - Research
- Represent Stanford to external R&D funding agencies and sister institutions throughout the world
- Represent the faculty's broad research interests in interactions with the University's administration and Board of Trustees
- Promote interest and proficiency in math, science, and engineering through Science Outreach to pre-collegiate students, their science teachers and the general public
- Establish, maintain, and oversee the Human Research Protection Program
- Provide oversight to Stanford's panels dealing with protecting the University from research risks (panels include human subjects, laboratory animals, radiation safety and biosafety)
- Represent Stanford's interests in responding to external legislation and regulations that potentially affect the health of academic research
- Provide training and communication to the members of the research community
- Provide export control guidance and support to members of the research community
- Serve as cognizant Dean's Office for Independent Labs, Institutes and Centers
Meet the Vice Provost and Dean of Research
Dr. Ann Arvin, the Lucile Salter Packard Professor in Pediatrics and Professor of microbiology and immunology, is the Vice Provost and Dean of Research at Stanford University. Dr. Arvin is a graduate of Brown University, holds a masters degree in philosophy from Brandeis University, and received her MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. Her clinical field is pediatric infectious diseases, and her laboratory research is in virology. After completing postdoctoral training at Stanford, she joined the faculty in 1978. She has served Stanford University and its School of Medicine in numerous positions of responsibility. Her appointment as Vice Provost was effective Nov. 1, 2006. In 2009, Dean Arvin was named as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and in 2012 she was named a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
