What's New In Kyoto?
We will be offering a new Autumn Quarter starting in 2017-18, allowing students a chance to see Kyoto in its beautiful autumnal colors as well as see the many festivals and rituals that only take part at this time of year. Students applying in Autumn need just one quarter of Japanese before coming on the program.
A new curriculum in Autumn covers topics as diverse as the visual arts of Japanese Buddhism, queer culture and life in Japan, and Japan’s energy-environment challenges. Students will spend a significant amount of their classes out and about in Kyoto, viewing examples of classical and modern art, exploring heritage artisanal workshops, and exercising their own creativity through photography and other means.
On Campus Gateway Course: JapanGen 121, "Translating Japan, Translating the West"
Offered during Winter quarter as part of the "Gateways to the World" program, the seminar course above is recommended to help you prepare for your time abroad. Additional consideration during the application process for this program will be given to students taking this course.

As the Imperial Capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto is the birthplace and custodian of many of the ancient traditions that make Japanese culture so distinctive. Yet Kyoto is also a strikingly dynamic, forward-looking and innovative city – an apparent contradiction that students on the Kyoto program can explore through their academic courses and field trips, through interactions with their homestay families and Doshisha University students, and through meeting the people of this incredible city in everyday life.
