Soviet Junior WAG, Batumi 1987 Play

Some background information for watching the Soviet Junior All-Union Club Teams Championships, Batumi 1987.

1987 was a pre-olympic year. As always, for the seniors the most important competition in pre-olympic year was the Spartakiade of Nations. Batumi competition was for those who were too young to be eligible for Seoul, but who most likely were to form the main Soviet team for the next cycle.

The competition was held for All-Union Club Teams. The term "Club" in Soviet context does not mean the same as in western world. It just showed which ministry provided the financing. Most "clubs" had training centres in all major cities. Club teams for All-Union competitions were formed after training camps and so-called CSs (Central Soviet Championships), so the teams consisted of gymnasts from various republics.

If I remember correctly, at this meet the teams consisted of two First Rank gymnasts (1976-1975), two Candidates (1975-1974) and two Masters (1974-1973). 1975 and 1974 were borderline, they could pick in which rank they compete.

The competition lasted for two days - "modified compulsories/optionals" and optionals. Two key factors: 1) since the FIG compulsories were to change after Seoul, the Soviet Junior Team management decided there was no point to compete Masters with the old compulsories; 2) the nature of uneven bars exercise was changing so dramatically, that it was decided to concentrate attention on learning swing elements; therefore it was decided to perform the first day exercise on single bar only.

On the first day the First Rank competed modified compulsories: vault, single bar, beam and floor. Candidates and Masters did modified optionals - optional exercise on single bar instead of uneven bars. The second day was normal optionals for all ranks. All-around and event winners were determined for all ranks based on the total of two days.

Open ended scoring was used. I do not know the details, but there were bonuses for extra Cs and may-be connections also. Deductions were taken from the start value, which could have been higher than ten. I do not have the results, but I know that Svetlana Ivanova won all-around with over 80 points. I have Masters' FX results to give you some idea: Ivanova 21.6 (she did double layout punch front, not on the tape), Kut 21.2, Stovbchataya 20.0.

I regret that I could not tape all the best exercises. I was with Trudovye Rezervy (TR) team (that year 3 of my hometown Tallinn girls made the team) and I had to tape them for later analysis (that rarely took place), even if something more interesting was happening elsewhere.

Also, I am sorry for poor quality. The camera was a 1980 model and it had some trouble with focus, so I had to follow the movements of the gymnast on the single bar with the camera, which I normally hate. Exercises filmed with camera standing still are much easier to watch. Also, I had to film the vault and single bar against the bright light. Anyhow, I hope it's better than nothing.
