Program Costs - Salary, Housing, Airfare

Students in the GEI program will receive a stipend and housing (or housing allowance) from the host company. Though your stipend amount and housing arrangement will vary from company to company, at a minimum the compensation will be sufficient to cover housing, local meals, transportation and other basic living expenses. The estimated support from companies is about USD $3,000–$5,000 for the summer period. If the host does not provide airfare, Stanford will provide round-trip airfare to and from the city in which student’s internships will take place. All students will be required to provide their own health insurance for the duration of their stay.

Language Preparation

For our internships in China, our goal is to encourage students who do not yet speak Chinese and to those who do; however, language skill in Standard Chinese (Mandarin) is essential for Stanford students living in China. Therefore, the School of Engineering provides a custom language course through the Stanford Language Center - CHINLANG 31E (Accelerated Beginning Mandarin for Engineering) - during spring quarter. The course will meet three to four hours per week and must be taken for a minimum of three units of credit. Students should register for CHINLANG 31E with the option of letter grade or CR/NC. This course requirement will be waived for students who have already taken at least one quarter of Mandarin or for students with equivalent experience.

Orientation & Visas

Pre-departure orientations will be provided through the program. You are required to have a passport that is valid six months after date of departure with at least one blank page in the passport for the visa. Documentation for applying for visas will be provided by the host companies. You will need to apply for visas with the proper invitation letters and visa papers; the fee is your responsibility.

As always, international students should consult the Bechtel International Center about their individual visa status; in some cases, international travel will not be advised.
