Remembering the History of Alcatraz
Short timeline of Alcatraz Occupation and Stanford student activism:
1895: The largest group of Indian prisoners, 19 Hopi "hostiles" were sent to Alcatraz because they would not farm as the government instructed them to while at boarding school and because they opposed forced education there.
1930s: Many California tribes terminated by the state and federal governments. Once dissolved, the tribes have no right to receive services or to own land.
1969: Alcatraz Occupation, November 20, 1969 (This protest for Native American rights, begun by San Francisco State University students, will last 19 months.)
1969: Native students host a benefit concert for Alcatraz Occupation held at Stanford's Memorial Church.
1970: Stanford American Indian Organization forms on October 21, 1970.
Celebration of the Native Theme House and the continued fight for federal re-recognition of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe.
