WE'RE REBUILDING.
THE NEXT ERA ARRIVES
Thank you voters! Because nearly 70% of you voted 'yes' on Measure RR on November 8, 2016, we have $3.5 billion in bond funding to begin our transition to a modern commuter rail system. We're rebuilding and reinvesting, with projects spanning every part of the region from the rolling hills of North Concord, to the tunnels of downtown San Francisco. We’re taking on today’s challenges, and moving forward together.
REBUILDING BART’S BACKBONE
Rebuilding work funded by Measure RR touches on all aspects of the infrastructure BART relies on to provide safe and reliable service. In the first four years of the Measure RR program, BART has focused on rebuilding projects most impactful to reliability, which include replacing track, electrical cabling, and other critical components that were first installed 50 years ago and have long since outlived their design lives. RR is also supporting the renewal of aging stations, boosting capacity, expanding safe access to the system, and relieving crowding.
WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?
Rebuilding projects are underway across the BART system as Measure RR enters its fifth year. The bond measure that was approved by more than 2/3 of BART District voters in 2016 has so far supported 151 projects. This total includes 27 completed projects, 61 under construction, 14 in the bidding process, and 49 in the design or planning phase.
Through June 2021 $991.5 million of Measure RR dollars have been invested to complete 30% of the total work planned under the rebuilding program. The full Measure RR rebuilding program will allocate $3.5 billion to rebuild the backbone of BART.
In its 2021 annual report the Measure RR Bond Oversight Committee wrote the rebuilding projects being prioritized by BART have been delivered in accordance with best practices and are already improving the experience of riders by enhancing the reliability of the BART system. The committee also wrote that it believes BART is meeting the bond mandate and is on track to deliver on its public commitments.
