Need an art break? Try Open Studios, a long-running afternoon event that invites the @stanford University community to explore the classrooms and studios of the McMurtry Building, where works by undergraduate students are displayed.

Open Studios offers a rare opportunity to see student work in the space it was created, and features drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, videos, and more. Join us at 3pm!

Printmaking has long held a significant position in @Stanford’s art practice thanks to internationally known professors such as Nathan Oliveira and Enrique Chagoya. ‘Full of Autumnal Scent: 10 years of graduate printmaking from Tama Art University, Tokyo, Japan’ is presented by the Department of Art & Art History and the Bowes Art & Architecture Library at the Stanford Art Gallery, on view for one more week, through December 3rd.

Co-director of the Asian American Art Initiative (#AAAI) and Assistant Curator of American Art at @cantorarts, @aleesapalexander is grateful for a gift of linocuts depicting scenes of/about Japanese incarceration by Henry Sugimoto (1900-1990) ↑ “Throughout these prints you see the small details of quotidian life pierced by the violence of internment—barracks, watchtowers, and barbed wire close in on children walking, mothers holding babies, men playing Go. Sugimoto was educated in the Bay Area and spent time in Paris before he was incarcerated in Jerome, Arkansas. I still need to do more research into when he made these—it was sometime after his release (likely the 1970s)”— @aleesapalexander

Join us tomorrow at 5:30pm at the Anderson Collection as we welcome artist and alum Kiyan Williams in conversation with A-lan Holt, director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford, to speak about Kiyan’s life and work as well as the role of artists as makers, thinkers, and scholars.

Kiyan’s ‘Reaching Towards Warmer Suns’ is a public work on view on the grounds of the Anderson Collection, among a grove of oak trees. The piece emerged from the artist’s time along the slave docks of Virginia within the context of the pandemic and protests against on-going anti-Black police violence. Head to our stories to RSVP.

The inaugural Arts + Justice Grants from @stanford

The inaugural Arts + Justice Grants from @stanford Arts Institute supported fourteen undergraduate and graduate students addressing social justice issues through a variety of artistic media.

Throughout the year, the cohort met regularly with coordinator and TAPS grad student Danee Conley to discuss their projects. The ten resulting projects include painting, graphic design, multimedia installation, poetry, film, fashion, 'zines, and oral history. Learn more about the artists and their work in our stories!

Applications for the 2021-2022 cohort of grant recipients are under review now.
