You can see exactly what your profile looks like to other people by using the View As tool.
  1. Go to your profile and click the Edit Profile button at the top right corner.
  2. Click the View As... button at the top right corner of the editing page.
  3. You’ll see what your profile looks to the public. To preview how your profile appears to a specific person, such as a friend or coworker, type their name into the open field and press enter.
Note: The View As tool doesn't show whether people can interact on your Wall through posts, likes or comments. Your Wall privacy settings will always apply, and anyone who can see a post can like or comment on it.

Here's an overview of who can see what on your profile (timeline) and tools you can use to control what you share.

Overview
  • You choose who can see basic information like your hometown or birthday right when you edit your profile (timeline). Click the Edit button at the top right corner of the page, then use the audience selector next to each piece of information to choose who can see that info.
  • Anyone can see your public information, which includes your name, profile picture, gender, username, user ID (account number), and networks (learn why).
  • Only you and your friends can post to your Wall (timeline). When you post something, you can control who sees it by using the audience selector. When friends post, whether people can see it depends on your Wall (timeline) privacy setting selection.

Tools
  • As you edit your profile information, you can control who sees it by using the audience selector.
  • Before photos and posts that you’re tagged in appear on your profile (timeline), you can approve or reject them by turning on Profile (Timeline) Review.
  • To choose who can see your tagged photos and posts after they appear on your profile (timeline), use the Profile (Timeline) Visibility privacy setting.
  • To see exactly what your profile (timeline) looks like to other people, use the View As tool.

Anyone who visits your profile can see that you have a Wall, but what they see when they click your Wall tab depends on the privacy you've set for posts there.

Who can see posts on your Wall

  • The visibility of posts you make on your own Wall depends on the audience you choose for each post using the audience selector. For example, a friend will see posts you've set to Friends and Public, while a non-friend will only see posts you've set to Public. If you do not have any public posts, then a non-friend will see a blank Wall tab.
  • The visibility of posts others make on your Wall depends on the setting you've chosen for who can see posts by others.

    We highlight your friend list.
By default, a changing selection of all your Facebook friends always appears under the Friends heading in the left column of your profile. This selection might include friends who you interact with the most in Wall posts, comments and mutually attended events. However, Facebook does not select friends to show based on whose profiles you choose to view or who you interact with over messages and chat.

Your family and relationship partner appear here, too.
If you choose to add family members or a relationship to your profile, those people will also be featured in the left column. Remember that you can always restrict who can see this information using the audience selector when you edit your profile.

The strip of photos along the top of your profile are the most recently tagged photos of you. To hide a specific photo from the top of your profile, roll over it and click the "x" in the top-right corner. This will not delete your photo — it can still be found on your photos page.

Please note: Your privacy settings have not changed. These photos will only be visible to the people selected in your "Photos and videos you're tagged in" privacy setting. This setting is located within the "Sharing on Facebook" section of your privacy settings.

People who are not allowed to view your tagged photos will see photos from your profile picture album instead. People who are not allowed to see either your tagged photos or your profile picture album will not see any photos at the top of your profile.

If you’re seeing a total number of friends that’s different from your real number of friends, it’s possible that some of them now have inactive accounts.

When someone’s account is inactive, it means that person can’t be seen or found on Facebook. Even though he or she is still counted as your friend, they won’t appear on your friend list anymore. This could happen when someone deactivates his or her account, or when someone’s account is disabled by Facebook.

If you’re seeing a total number of tagged photos, videos, or notes that’s different from the real number of things you’re tagged in, it’s possible that friends who had tagged you now have inactive accounts.

When someone’s account is inactive, it means that person — and the photos, videos, or notes they uploaded — can’t be seen or found on Facebook. Even though his or her tags are still counted, they won’t appear on Facebook. An account can become inactive if someone chooses to deactivate it, or if the account is disabled by Facebook.

Yes; however, no information is shared outside of your public information.

You control what parts of your profile (timeline) people see via the audience selector, and the Privacy Settings Page offers general controls to manage the rest of your privacy on Facebook.

If you want to see how your profile (timeline) looks to most people on Facebook, use the View As tool when you’re editing your information. Please note that you may see a different version of the site than others when you perform searches from your own account. You will always be able to find yourself in search because you can always view your own profile (timeline). However, people who do not have this permission will not be able to find your account.

Please keep in mind that you will see a different set of options than other users when searching for your account or viewing your profile. Since you cannot add yourself as a friend, the "Add to Friends" link will not appear.

You will always be able to see the links for "View Profile," "Send Message," and "View Friends" when you find your own account, but these options may not be available to every other user depending on your privacy settings. Also, please remember that although you will never see the option to message or poke yourself on your own profile, other users will see this option.

If you have adjusted your Search settings on the Privacy Settings page, these changes will be reflected properly when other users search for your profile.

To adjust how your birthday appears to your friends, click Edit (Update Info) button along the top of your profile (timeline) and find the Basic Info section. From here, you have two different ways to control your birthday visibility:
  1. Pick who can see your birthday. Choose an audience from the inline audience selector on the far right.
  2. Choose which parts of your birthday your audience sees. Use the dropdown under your birthday fields to choose. You can display your full birthday, or just the month and day, or you can hide your birthday completely.
Note: If you hide your birthday completely, your friends won't receive reminders when it's approaching. If you still want them to receive these reminders, you will need to at least make the month and day visible to your friends.

Before you post, look at the audience selector. Use the dropdown menu to choose who you want to share a post with.

     Public (Maximum audience for adults)

Friends of Friends (Maximum audience for minors)

Friends (+ friends of anyone tagged)

Custom (Includes specific groups, friend lists or people you’ve specified to include or exclude)

You'll see this tool wherever you share content, whether it’s a status update or information on your profile (timeline).

The tool remembers the audience you shared with the last time you posted something and uses the same audience when you share again unless you change it. For example, if you choose Public for a post, your next post will also be Public unless you change this audience when you post.

If you want to change who you’re sharing with, open the dropdown menu and choose a different audience. Remember: anyone you tag in a post, along with their friends, may see the post.

To make it clear who you’re sharing with at all times, the audience you select appears along with whatever you are saying, every time you share. You can also use the audience selector to change who you are sharing with after you post something.
