This is the same explosion in which Natasha Tynes almost perished. From The Telegraph with thanks to Granny Weatherwax:
A car bomb in Doha which demolished a theatre leaving one Briton dead and up to 50 people injured, may be the work of al-Qa'eda, investigators believe.Jonathan Adams died when an explosion rocked the building in Qatar's capital Doha where a 100-strong audience was watching a performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night....
The Qatar Interior Ministry said a suicide car bomber, Egyptian Omar Ahmad Abdullah Ali, caused the explosion and an investigation is under way.
One theory being investigated is that al-Qa'eda was behind the attack. It has been reported that the group has threatened to target Westerners living in the region....
Or perhaps Shakespeare doesn't agree with them.
But Mr. Spencer, remember that islam claims Shakespeare was a sufi muslim. (That was extreme sarcasm)

I believe the playwright's name should be spelled "Sheik Spear".
And don't forget, "there is evidence that some of the most influential of the Greeks may have been Muslim." Yes, we're talking about Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle!

On a serious note, it's not good that soft targets (theatres) are being hit. I hope that theatres and sports arenas in the US are thinking about how to recognize and thwart suicide bombers or car bombers.

Why should Quatar be safe?
Why should anyone feel safe? The Jihad must continue...
With regards to 'Sheik Spear', Plato, Socrates, Aristotle:
It appears that those who have NOTHING to give are now claiming EVERYTHING - to which they have no right.
If it wasn't so sad we could disqualify it as hilarious. But these people kill for 'belief'- not knowledge, not evidence, not facts. Will they claim Sheik Yer'mami too?

Carolyn, Kelley, that is some of the funniest shit I've ever seen. "Muslim or close to it." OMG.
Kudos to you ladies for finding those links.
Geoff
To add: this is essentially the same way the, er, "holy" Quran also claims Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, I would imagine. Can not islam produce its own thinkers?
Geoff
Geoff-
The last two serious Muslim thinkers were naturally arguing with each other in two contradictory books:
1) "The Incoherence of the Philosophers" by Al-Ghazali
(criticizing Greek and Roman philosophers according to his 'more enlightened' Islamic thought)
and:
2) "The Incoherence of the Incoherent" by Ibn Rushd* [called 'Averroes' in the West]
(criticizing Al-Ghazali's naive misunderstandings of Greek and Roman thought, and championing rationalism over religious-ism). *
Since then, it has been VERY slim pickings in the Muslim intellectual/philosophical world- out of their understandable fear that: if they dare to demonstrate they HAVE a head, their fellow Muslims will come and REMOVE it.
Best to say 'Mohammad knows all', and eat your sheep's eyeballs in peace.
*No surprise, his books were burned by the Islamic authorities and he was forced into exile for saying that thinking is superior to believing.
Hi BigSleep,
You know, I've flipped a bit through "Incoherence of the Philosophers" but never got around to Ibn Rushd. A bit familiar with his arguments, that's all. Damn, I really have to make time sometime. (Rewriting student's papers...oh Lord, give me students that understand evolutionary theory. Please? And make them able to write manuscripts? Pretty please?)
Sigh...ah well, thanks for the tip mate. If I ever get a chance, I'll look up Averroes.
Geoff
Geoff-
Averroes is far superior to Al Ghazali.
Something like Nietzsche compared to Hegel, for sheer readablility and literary entertainment.
But, for the real thing, philosophy-wise, Heraclitus and Aristotle, Descartes and Hume, up to Henri Bergson and Edmund Husserl, have more original and useful substance.
And something like Alan W. Watts' "Erotic Spirituality" or John C. Lilly's "Programming and Meta-Programming the Human Biocomputer" or Julian Jaynes "The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bi-Cameral Mind" (tongue-twisting titles, both), more recently, are more fruitful and fun.
Plus Colin Wilson's "The Outsider", "The Occult" and "Mysteries" fill in the gaps these generally drier writers tend to self-censor out of their thinking.
To paraphrase poet Dorothy Parker:
So many mentalities, so little time!
Just caught a program on the Discovery Channel (insomnia) about finding the Garden of Eden. It started out being really informative, but the entire second half of the program turned into a love-fest about islam. I have never seen such lies! It said that muhammad preached to Meccaan society about helping the poor and needy. It told how islam "spread", not one word about force and murder. In the credits I noticed that Esposito was the contributing authority. I just do not understand why the truth is not the aim of education anymore.
Carolyn2~ things like that show on the Discovery Channel are precisely why I will Never stop posting links to what they are doing in our colleges and public schools. (Eh, Giaour? :)
