Dhimmitude at DePaul: teacher suspended for "racism" over remarks that "offended" Muslim students. Joel Mowbray in FrontPage (thanks to EPG and RB) discusses freedom of speech on campus:
In academia today, "academic freedom" protects those who compare the 9/11 victims to Nazi higher ups, but it does not cover a professor with the temerity to challenge the beliefs of Muslim students in a single encounter which constituted, in the words of his boss, an "assault on their dignity."Thomas Klocek, a part-time adjunct professor at DePaul University, knows this first-hand; he was unlucky enough to fall on the wrong side of the political correctness fence....The Muslim students who had the 20-30 minute run-in with him that precipitated his suspension charge [of] racism....
On September 15, 2004, Klocek was strolling through the student activities fair at DePaul's downtown campus when he noticed a flyer showing Israeli tanks destroying Palestinian homes. "It was very one-sided," he explained, "and I wanted them to think about the bigger reality."
He put on his professor hat and tried to do what teachers do: he tried to get them to think. And that's what has led to his downfall.
Approaching the Students for Justice in Palestine booth, Klocek engaged the students. And then he enraged them. Depending on who's telling the story, Klocek either earlier or later in the conversation said something to the effect of that while not all Muslims are terrorists, all the terrorists currently operating in the world today are Muslims.
That's not an entirely true statement-look at the Irish Republican Army for just one example-but then again, he was quoting a fairly prominent Muslim, the head of the al-Arabiya satellite television network. And while you can quibble with the full accuracy of the claim, you can't deny its essence.
Same goes for what the Muslim students consider his other truly offensive remark, that there is no Palestinian ethnicity and that the term really only became prominent in media coverage in the last 20 to 25 years. There has been in various forms a region--though not a country, and certainly not an ethnically homogenous state--known as "Palestine" going back to the Ottoman period, but "Palestinian" is more of a regional identification than an ethnic one. And while older than two decades, its usage only became common in the 20th century.
Eight days later, some of the students involved met with the dean and cried racism. They asked for his head. They got it.
Read it all.
This is totally outrageous.
We must campaign to pressure Dean Dumbleton and DePaul University to reverse this decision and give Prof. Klocek the back pay he deserves.
We must also be prepared to fund litigation against Dean Dumbleton and DePaul University.
E-mails, respectful please, could be sent to:
sdumblet@depaul.edu
If you send an e-mail, as i have, please keep in mind that Dean Susanne Dumbleton is a fine person and a respected academic, who has made a decision that needs revisiting. We all make mistakes.
dby is oh so politically correct when it comes to the outrageous actions of Dean Dumbleton at DePaul. She suspended Professor Klocek without the merest due process and relied on the representations of Muslim students who simply objected to their being challenged for their faulty facts and illogic. Dean Dumbleton is typical of "good people" in academia and our bureaucracies who would violate the first amendment rights of those capable of challenging such noxious untruths and lies from Arab fascists. That is what Brigitte Gabriel said in her speech at the Columbia forum on the Middle East and Academic "inegrity" sponsored by Scholars for Peace in the Middle East. Since De Paul has given sanctuary to a corrupt Jew and holocaust denier, son of Warsaw getto survivors, Professor Norman Finkelstein and has a Palestian art exhibit in vogue on its campus, I think that any due process for Professor Klocek is doubtful and that he should seek relief in the federal courts with the assistance of, the ACLU and AAUP. But they probably would not step into this tanglefoot, would they? So, perhaps aother group FIRE, whose David French also spoke at Columbia last Sunday can take up the cudgel for the violation of Professor Klocek's free speech and first amendment rights.
OT, but I want to mention the death of comedian Dave Allen.
He was always poking fun at the Catholic church. After the Salman Rushdie affair, he made a statement in which he said that "If I was a muslim, I would be dead by now."
And you know what? He would be.
Thank goodness for all of those who loved his brand of humour, that he wasn't born a muslim.
Voltaire - yes, Dave Allen was a great commedian, always poking fun at the Pope and religion generally.
His Ian Paisley impressions were excellent.
Many of my Catholic friends enjoyed his humour. You can't imagine a Muslim equivalent, at least not a living one.
And what are the college republicans doing? I'd expect at least a token protest of this unjust decision from at least those budding consevatives!
Only one thing can get the attention of university administrators: alumni willing to cut off all donations. Even if that makes the innocent faculty suffered, it is necessary in order to change the hideous state of American universities, or at least in everything to do with what used to be called the Humanities, which are far closer to Ward Churchill than to Jacques Barzun. But how could it be otherwise? Look at what goes on at the MLA or the AHA, and then read a year's worth of that excellent publication "Academic Questions," and find out that the con-game by which universities extract money from grateful and gullible alumni, who have no idea what is really going on, and many of whom do not understand why, for example, the teaching of English by someone who cannot construct a lucid English sentence -- Fredric Jameson or Homi Bhabha will do -- is also to be deplored, that Cornel West (so eagerly picked up by Princeton) brings not luster but laughter wherever he appears, that the MIddle Eastern department at Columbia is simply an extreme case of a general problem: failure to monitor what is being taught, failure to see if the subjects of greatest importance are covered or if only the tangential, reflecting the careerism or bias of the instructory, is offered. When not Islam but only the Arab-Israeli dispute becomes the main focus of a Middle Eastern deparment, one knows that something is wrong.
American universities should be cut off, entirely, from donations. Donations from those alumni who are supposed to give because they have been deeply impressed with the performance of the football team. Alumni who are supposed to give because 20 or 30 or 50 years ago, that school "gave them a chance" and they wish to "repay" it. The school that "gave them a chance" does not exist anymore; a usurper now claims the title, and asks for the handout. Do not be fooled. Take for money elsewhere. Until American universities reform themselves, and begin to change the nature of their offerings in the humanities and social sciences, they should be made to suffer -- oh, don't worry, they won't suffer very much.
Chinese Gordon, it does irk me when being politically correct seems the best way to go, and i am forced, by my own evaluation, to walk that walk.
My objective is to have Prof. Klocek reinstated, not to insult Dean Dumbleton.
I would like to have suggested to Dean Dumbleton that reinstating Prof. Klocek would be helpful to the reputation of DePaul University, but that would be untrue.
Nothing can help the reputation of a university that gives an income and a platform to such an utterly contemptible scumbag as norman finklestein - a person who lies, who instructs the young with untruths, who enthusiasticly desecrates the memory of his own parents, and of many millions of other people, Christians, Jews, Homosexuals, Gypsies, Freedom fighters, all murdered by the nazis, so he can be a third rate celebrity in a circus of sick souls. TRULY A VILE PERSON.
You are right Hugh, cut off the funding.
Hi Everyone,
Hey, if you are not already familiar with these visuals, please do check them out. After you download them, then save them under your pictures folder and then you can e-mail them to your family and friends. A picture really does say a thousand words.

Islamic penetration of the US education system from primary school to university level, is quite frightening. Bearing this in mind, it does not bear thinking what will transpire when the muslim population doubles in the next decade or so. This does not bode well for the future.
The best approach would be to bring the story to the media, namely Fox,for no other network would make it public.
A parallel between prof.Churchill`s insults against 9/11 victims being considered "free speech" and Thomas Klocek`s intention to have a balanced debate about islamic terrorism, being considered "hate speech",such a parallel must be made in the media...and let the public decide.
Wait...
Dave Allen's DEAD? No. No.
When? How?
May his god go with him.
Geoff
A writer in the Arab newspaper, Al Ahram, is incensed that Arabs can't always have free reign to "demonize" Israel--his terminology--without it being labelled "anti-Semitic". http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2005/733/eg3.htm
But don't you dare criticism Islam in any way--that's unacceptable Islamophobia.
Curious, isn't it that only Muslims--students or otherwise--can have their perspective "dishonored?" Name any university or college and there it's okay to visciously attack Jews under the guise of being "anti-Zionist" not anti-Jewish. Zionism is considered an affront to the ummah because it deals with land once under Muslim control. It is acceptable among the politically correct to attack Israel--even when its government is doing everything to please the US administration, EU, Russia, Arabs, everyone, doing everything except assuring the survival of Israel.
In a not-so-roundabout way, Muslims can deride Jews, likening them to Nazis, calling them racists, occupiers of Arab land, etc. and no one bats an eye. But disagree with a PLO jihadist about the legitimacy of there being such a thing as an ancient "Palestinian people" and you are "dishonoring" them. In the minds of those groveling before an arrogant Islam, only Arab Muslims (and the people they once conquered and forced to adopt their ideology) are allowed to have an honor that must be respected.
Well posted unicorn!
IT is of course as you say the appalling lack of moral equivslence that is the most shocking.
That is is quite politically correct for the extreme left "academics" and the islamists to call the Jews nazis and all manners of recist diatribe whithin Anerican and Uk universities and yet the slighest criticism of Islam is a racist and punishable offence.
Such is the clear thinking and logic of academia!
Of course it is the Islamists and the extreme leftists themselves, who are the closest to the ideology of Nazism and fascism. The evidence for this is overwhelming.
In fact as happened in the late twenties and early thirties, we will no doubt soon see the removal of Jews and Israelis from American universities. At least the ones who do not embrace the ideologies of the fascist left and the islamofascists.
Is it any wonder that so many racist extreme right wing groups align themselves firmly with them?
Once again we see P.Cs labelling those opposing islam "racist". Once again islam is not a race. It is an ideology like fascism and communism except that it is far worst. This reminds me of a game called "hearts". The only difference is that the "queen of spades" is the racist card. Coinidentely a spade is a symbol of hate. The muslims are the "queens" of it.
Unicorn: You can not 'dishonor' parasites. They don't know the meaning of the word.
Dishonored is Spain and the Zapatero government!
700 years Spain has been laboring under Islam, now they are being infiltrated again. And here's what they do:
If you want to see how Spain bends down and gets ready to take it up the rear,- read this:

Geoff, he died yesterday, or maybe the day before. He died peacefully in his sleep.
His wife is expecting his fourth child in a month.
In 711 CE, the Umayyad Caliph al-Walid gave permission to the Arab governer of North Africa, Musa ibn Nusair, to attack Spain, which was seen as a prime target for jihad. Musa decided to send the great Berber warrior general, Tariq ibn Ziyad, leading a force of approximately 12,000 Berber and Arab soldiers to take Spain in the holy conquest of Qur'an and sword. In early July, they crossed into Europe through the strait of Gibraltar—the Europeanized word for Jabal-al-Tarik, which means "the hill of Tarik." Gebel-al-Tarik means "Rock of Tarik."
It was over within four years, as the vast majority of Spanish land fell to the hordes of Allah's soldiers and became dar al-Islam.
That's how it stayed for more than 700 years until the equally long Reconquista (reconquest) culminated in Ferdinand and Isabella handing the remaining Muslim population its walking papers, along with Spain's Jews. The last Muslims of al-Andalus, in Granada, were finally impelled to flee en masse to Morocco.
Today, up to four million grandsons of the Moriscos are living in North African countries like Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
WAQF
In Arabic, waqf can literally mean prevention, restraint, or retention. In Islam, a waqf is any property that has been given for the benefit of Muslims, in perpetuity, and to please God. It is essentially making land, or other material, God's property, not to be taken back by anyone. It is an important part of shari'ah law, and has several purposes.
According to the shari'ah, territories which are gained through jihad become waqf, and cannot thereafter be given up. They become, literally, an inseverable part of God's dominion, for the sole welfare of the ummah If territories acquired by Islam are taken by conquering infidels, they must be retaken in jihad—today, tomorrow, sooner or later. It is a religious obligation.
This is what Israel shares with Spain.
When Khalifah Omar took Jerusalem in 638 CE, he made Israel an Islamic waqf. Indeed, in their charter, Hamas demonstrates how their right to destroy Israel is simply an obligation to God through the principle of waqf:
These are not the aberrant words of extremists. They are the prescriptions of mainstream Islam, derived from the Qur'an and sunnah. In the triumphalist creed of Islam, the proprietary concerns of the rest of the world are secondary to the Muslims' mission from God. This includes land upon which a nation was legitimately established by an indigenous people. Once it's taken in the conquest of jihad, it's gone, and it's gone for good.
we have seen what has happened in the Balkans, the faultline of Islamo european conflict.
The Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades stated explicitly that their attacks on Spain were revenge for the loss of al-Andalus in 1492. Their statement read, in part: "This is part of settling old accounts with Spain, the crusader, and America's ally in its war against Islam.''
The Moriscos are active again in al-Andulus. They want their waqf, their lost glory, and their rightful place as the masters of the kuffar, who are fit only to live there as dhimmis.
And the weak socialist leftist appeasers are in no way able to defend Spain or indeed understand that they are under attack.
Spain is not Israel, and of course the spaniards have much to learn from the Isralis - but will they?
The contemptible Zapatero government represents the delayed entry into what it perceives as modernity (by which it means its perception of something vaguely like Sweden in the sixties) by people who were young when Franco fell. It lives on reheated and dead sixties pieties; it says enough about the morons that they take seriously Kinsey's ancient, thrice-damned and ten-times-thrice refuted lie about 10% of the population being homosexual. Its cultural delay is scary, and, in a sense, very close to that of many Muslims; their view of modernity is exactly as skewed, provincial, and self-indulgent - only, what the Muslim mainstream hates, the Zapaterists love. Therefore, their chief agenda is to hammer the Church and Catholicism in every way they can. If they have a choice on any two ways to do anything, they will choose the one that insults the Church, because, in their provincial, backward little minds, to be modern is to be anti-Christian. Everything else is to be understood in this light. Therefore, the fact that the Church in Spain is historically connected with the struggle against Muslim dominion inevitably means that the Zapaterists take up a grovelling attitude to Muslims, wallowing in the guilt for their ancestors being so unkind as to chase their enemies out of their country. This does not involve any PERSONAL sense of guilt, since the people who are really being condenmed are dead; but it allows them the shameful pleasure of being more righteous than their fathers. (And perhaps they are grateful to the murderers of 190 of their fellow-citizens for winning them an election they would never otherwise have won, but this is hardly a politic thing to reflect in public.) The Zapatero government, in short, is a provincial, culturally stunted, helpless mob of small, vindictive minds, fighting the battles of a hundred years ago, and a disaster for Spain and Europe. There is nothing good to be said for it, and no worse prospect for Europe than the prospect that it might win the next elections.
