I'm having trouble downloading the correct version of Internet Explorer 8. What should I do?

If you're unable to download the browser from the top of the Internet Explorer 8 homepage, click the "other locales and versions" text under the "Download Now" button to manually select your locale and operating system for Internet Explorer 8 and initiate the download.

After installing Internet Explorer 8, it doesn’t seem to be performing as fast as I thought it would. Can I do anything about this?

You should see a noticeable difference in speed and performance with Internet Explorer 8 when compared to older versions of the browser. Sometimes, older add-ons and toolbars can slow down the performance of Internet Explorer 8 so you may not be getting the full benefit of the performance improvements in the new browser.

Internet Explorer 8 introduces a way for you to see if add-ons are slowing down your browser. From within Internet Explorer 8, select Tools/Manage Add-ons and ensure Toolbars and Extensions is selected in the Add-on Types section. Now scroll across to the right of that window, you should see a column called Load time. This shows how long it is taking your different add-ons to load, in this case a higher number is worse. If you add up all the load time values you see, that is how long it is taking those add-ons to load and hence stopping you from getting the best experience browsing the web with Internet Explorer. Look for add-ons that appear to be taking a long time to load – even 0.2 seconds can visibly slow things down, especially if you have several add-ons taking that long to load. You can Disable those add-ons temporarily by selecting them and clicking the Disable button. Having disabled those add-ons, try browsing the Internet to see if things feel like they’re running faster. If you see an improvement, you then need to decide “Do I need this add-on?”. If not, you can leave it disabled. If you determine you do need it, see if there is a newer version of that add-on available from the software vendor. You can enable add-ons the same way you disabled them at any time.

How do I make Internet Explorer my default web browser?
