Harnaaz Sandhu did India proud and brought home the Miss Universe 2021 crown.
The 21-year-old model and actress beat contestants from 80 countries to win the coveted title. With this win, Harnaaz is now only the third Indian to win the title after Sushmita Sen won the crown in 1994 and Lara Dutta in 2000.

Hailing from Chandigarh, she celebrated her big win in true desi style saying, "Chak de fatte India!'

After taking her first walk as Miss Universe 2021, Harnaaz proceeded backstage where she sent out a message to all at home. In a video message, Sandhu said, " Namaste, Sat Sri Akaal universe. Thank you so much to each one of you for supporting me since day 1, always believing in me and making me feel worth this. Now this is the time to save the universe. Let's do it together. Thank you and love you."

The beauty made it to the top 3 after her powerful answer, calling for less talk and more action.

When asked how she would convince people who think that climate change is a hoax, Harnaaz said, "My heart breaks to see how nature is going through a lot of problems, and it is all due to our irresponsible behaviour. I totally feel that this is the time to take action and talk less. Because our each action could save or kill nature. Prevent and protect is better than repent and repair and this is what I am trying to convince you guys today."

The 70th edition of the event was held in Eilat, Israel, and telecasted live around the globe.

The Chandigarh-based model, who is pursuing her master's degree in public administration, was presented the 'Power of Unity' crown by her predecessor Andrea Meza of Mexico, who won the pageant in 2020.

While Paraguay's Nadia Ferreira, 22, finished second, South Africa's Lalela Mswane, 24, came third.

During the final question and answer round, Sandhu was asked what advice would she give to young women on dealing with the pressure they face today.

"The biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves, to know that you are unique is what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let's talk about more important things that are happening worldwide.

"This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourselves because you are the leader of your life, you are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that's why I am standing here today," she said to thundering applause.

Sandhu started her journey in pageantry when she won Times Fresh Face in 2017, representing Chandigarh at the age of 17. She later won the LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2021 title.

Sandhu has also worked in a few Punjabi films, including 'Yaara Diyan Poo Baran' and 'Bai Ji Kuttange'.

The ceremony was hosted by Steve Harvey and saw performances from American singer JoJo.

The selection committee included actor and Miss Universe India 2015 Urvashi Rautela, Adamari López, Adriana Lima, Cheslie Kryst, Iris Mittenaere, Lori Harvey, Marian Rivera and Rena Sofer.
