**Limited $200,000 funding opportunity for all Stanford assistant professors with UTL, MCL, and NTLR faculty appointments** (see eligibility below) whose research involves either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational cancer. Any area of cancer research is eligible. A university-wide internal selection process is required.

Cancer Institute will notify the applicant selected that he/she can proceed with the full application/proposal: March 28, 2018
Cancer Institute to submit the name and contact information of the applicant to the V Foundation: April 2, 2018
(The foundation will then contact the applicant to provide the online application system.)
Completed PDRF form and complete application materials must be submitted to the applicant's RPM: April 24, 2018

Amount of funding:
Each grant will total $200,000, and is given in two annual installments of $100,000 each.
Only direct costs of the research are supported by this award.
Purpose:
The V Scholar Program – Designed to identify, retain and further the careers of talented young investigators. Provides funds directly to young scientists who are developing their own independent laboratory research projects. These grants enable talented young scientists to establish their laboratories and gain a competitive edge necessary to earn additional funding from other sources. The V Scholars determine how to best use the funds in their research projects.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research submits Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to the directors of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated facilities and prominent universities involved in critical cancer research throughout the United States.
Among our highly ranked finalists for the 2018 V Scholar program, we will designate at least one of the highest ranked applications from a minority applicant as the recipient of a 2018 Stuart Scott Memorial Fund V Scholar Award.
Special Focus area: Any area of cancer research is eligible

- Institution Eligibility:
- Only research institutions that received invitations may submit a nominee.
- Institutions must be non-profit research facilities in the US or Canada.

- Applicant eligibility:
The V foundation Scholar candidate must, by the due date of the application (May 1, 2018), have all of the following:- hold a tenure-track faculty assistant professor position** at their cancer research
institution. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for this grant competition. - **Stanford eligibility clarification: the foundation has approved our assistant professors with UTL, MCL and NTLR faculty positions.
- have been appointed to their first full-time assistant professor faculty position within the last 5 years, and not yet been promoted to associate professor. (*Use the start date of the assistant professor UTL, MCL and NTLR faculty appointment approved by the Provost.)
- Clinical scientists are eligible if the research institution can demonstrate that it will fully support the research applicant (e.g., dedicated lab space, start-up funds, dedicated research time).
- Not eligible: Clinician Educator (CE) Assistant Professors, Instructors, Clinical Instructors, Academic staff-research (i.e., research associates)
- Be employed at a non-profit research institution (eg. 501c3, Section 170).
- Must have at least 2 years post-doctoral (MD or PhD) fellowship training. For MDs, a minimum of one year is acceptable if only one year is required for the specialty.
- Applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or be a permanent legal resident in the U.S..
- Institutions are encouraged to nominate individuals from a minority group underrepresented in science ethnic group (for the purposes of this application: African American or of African descent, Hispanic American, Hispanic or Latino/Latina persons and Native American and/or an Alaskan Native). From the highly ranked finalists for the 2018 V Scholar award, the foundation will designate at least one of the highest ranked applications from a minority applicant as the recipient of a 2018 Stuart Scott Memorial Fund V Scholar Award.
- Other funding restriction: Applicant can NOT already hold an RO1 or RO1-equivalent grants.
As of the Due Date of the Application (May 1, 2018), applicants who have been awarded RO1s or RO1 equivalent grants (Project leader on an NIH multi-investigator grant, ACS) as principal investigators or as co-leader at the time of application submission are not eligible for consideration as a V Scholar. In addition, applicants cannot be a co-leader on a SPORE project or (co)PI of the following NIH grant mechanisms: U01, DP1, DP2, R37, R23. In addition, principal investigators for research project grants (RPGs), analogous to NIH/NCI R01 awards, would be ineligible. The V Scholar award is meant to support research to leverage these larger awards so the nominee may not already have received these awards.
