Sending and Receiving Pages

Sending pages

There are four primary methods for sending a page to a user:

  1. Automated phone system and Page Operator
  2. Smart Page (Directory & Paging)
  3. Spok Mobile — SmartPaging App
  4. Email based paging

For Code, STAT, Urgent, High Priority, or Priority pages; please use the Page Operator via the automated phone system.

1. Sending pages via the automated phone system and Page Operator:

To send a page via the automated phone system, please dial the following phone number based on the priority level and the origin of the phone call.

High priority (CODE / STAT / URGENT)

Dial 211 for any code calls. This includes codes Blue, North, Pink, Red and other emergency codes. Use 211 for STAT pages of any other sort (Cards/Anesthesia/PICU…) and be sure to indicate "STAT" to the operator when requesting the page. Use 211 for any type of urgent page request.

DON'T FORGET: When you need to place a STAT or Urgent page, dial the appropriate emergency code. Although these calls also go to the page operator, such calls are given priority treatment. Only the operator can cause emergency pages to generate special "STAT tones" on an individual's pager, show a special character on the pager display, or send a page out before any routine pages that the system is transmitting. Each of these special capabilities can be vital to obtaining an immediate response.

Priority

Priority includes requests for operator-assisted pages by physicians and staff. Operators answer these calls before routine requests.

  • When you do not know the paging ID of the person you want to page, you can call the Page Operator and they can look up the person's paging ID and place the page.
  • You should use Priority for on-call requests and temporary changes to on-call schedules (e.g., Dr. Smith phones from the car "I'm covering for Dr. Jones for XYZ service from now through Tuesday at noon.")
  • Additionally, clinics should refer patients and their families to call (650) 723-6661 if an on-call medical service or staff member needs to be paged when the clinic is closed.

Routine

This procedure lets you place a page without assistance from the page operator. You must know the paging ID of the person you are paging and be using a touch-tone telephone.

  1. After dialing the appropriate Routine phone number, the system prompts you to enter the paging ID of the person you wish to page.
  2. The system plays back the ID you entered or the user's name and tells you if this person is currently accepting pages.
  • If the person is currently accepting pages:
Enter your call-back number.  After you hang up, the system will place the page.
  • If the person is notcurrently accepting pages:
     Hang up.

Depending upon how the person has set his/her paging status, the system may also give you the option of storing a call-back number or transferring to the person's voice mailbox.

Call Connect

This procedure lets you place a page and remain on the line. When the person you paged responds, the paging system automatically connects him/her to you. You must be using a touch-tone telephone.

  1. After dialing the appropriate Routine phone number, the system prompts you to enter the paging ID of the person you wish to page.
  2. The system plays back the ID you entered or the user's name and tells you if this person is currently accepting pages.
  • If the person is currently accepting pages:
The system prompts you to record your name for playback to the person and then places your page. Remain on the line and, if the person responds to the page, you are automatically connected. If the person does not respond after several minutes, the system states that the person is unavailable. You can hang up, or press 0 to connect to the operator.
  • If the person is not currently accepting pages:
The system will not page the person and suggest you try again later. You can hang up or press 0 to connect to the operator. Depending upon how the person has set his/her paging status, the system may also give you the option of storing a call back number or transferring to the person's voice mailbox.

2. Sending pages via Smart Page website:

Smart Page is a web-based interface where you can send or trace pages to someone, or review your own pages, and set your preferences. Please do not use Smart Page to send Code, STAT, Urgent, High Priority or Priority pages. Please visit smartpage.stanford.edu to use the Smart Web messaging portal. For detailed support using Smart Page, please visit Smart Page support.

3. Sending pages via Spok Mobile — SmartPaging App:

For information on sending pages via Spok Mobile app, please visit the Spok Mobile Quick Start Guide.

4. Sending pages via email:

If you know your recipient's 5-digit pager ID, you can send a page by email. Use this addressing convention, without the brackets:
[5-digit ID] @pageme.stanford.edu.

Receiving pages (SMS Paging)

Messages for the SMS Paging Service are sent from one of the three telephone numbers listed below. We recommend users add the numbers to their cell phone Address Book. Use an easily recognizable name such as "Stanford Paging" so you'll know immediately when you get an SMS page.
