The scientific thrust of the Cancer Epidemiology Program is the improvement in the ability to prevent cancer and reduce its burden through new knowledge in surveillance, etiology, patterns of care, and survival. Dr Alice S Whittemore and Dr Esther M John, both senior cancer epidemiologists with extensive cancer research experience who have worked together for over 15 years, lead the program. Coordinating efforts among the Cancer Prevention Institute of California (formerly NCCC), Stanford Prevention Center, Stanford Health Research and Policy, Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, and Palo Alto VA Health Economics Resource Center; their research has been conducted primarily via large population-based case-control and cohort studies in the ethnically diverse population of the San Francisco Bay Area. Case-control studies typically collect demographic and exposure data, DNA from peripheral lymphocytes, and/or archived tissue samples. Cohort studies are based on follow-up of healthy individuals for cancer incidence (e.g., California Teachers Study), and of incident cases for cancer care, quality of life, and survival (e.g., CanCORS and Family Registries). Cancer sites of particular interest include breast, ovary, prostate, and lymphomas.
Drs Whittemore and John work together to maximize interactions between researchers by:- facilitating the translation of basic science findings into population-based research settings
- using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program for generating research hypotheses and identifying patterns of cancer care
- facilitating clinical research by providing SEER-based survival information
- developing methods for disseminating research findings to the community, particularly to minority and under served populations
- enabling strong cancer control research studies by fostering interactions and joint studies between the Cancer Epidemiology Program and the Cancer Prevention and Control Program.
